31987, Interesting 420a tidbits... Posted by JasonESi_T, Sep-05-02 04:41 PM
Since Alain's recent post at ASOG points out the similarities with the 2.2/2.5 old turbo Mopars with our own 420a's, I've been doing a lot more reading about such things.
I couldn't believe the Mopar used the same cylinder bore at 3.44 for every single one of these engines, the 420a included. Back then, 2.5L guys used the stronger 2.2L pistons apparently all the time and both groups were able to borrow other things from eachother as well. Furthermore, it lends itself to the assumption that these pistons would be able to transplanted into our 420a's. Apparently according to Alain, the new turbo 2.4L SRT-4 will also share that same 3.44 bore. At $52 a piston/rod combo, I think people should start jumping at it, if indeed that piston would work in our engines. It certainly sounds like a great bargain.
Anyways. here's another neat quote taken by Dan Minick, a columnist for Automotive Rebuilder, who pointed out:
"The 2.0 blocks (both sohc/dohc) are the same casting number. There may be machining differences for mounting?
The SOHC cylinder head is only used on the 2.0 SOHC. The DOHC Neon shares a cylinder head with the 2.4, but with reversed flow.
The 2.0/2.4 uses the same bore and bore centers as the old 2.2/2.5. There are quite a few similarities with the lower end of the block of the 'new' 2.0/2.4 and the 2.2/2.5. However the cylinder head of the 2.0/2.4 DOHC is an outright copy of the Mitsu 2.0 G63 DOHC, while the SOHC version of the Chrysler 2.0 borrows heavily from Mitsu's early 90s G15 1.5 colt motor."

Food for thought!

So long as they didn't copy that (2g) block! :-)

So, did Lotus copy Mitsubishi when they were designing the 2.2L 4 cylinder race motor that our head was originally from? Lotus designed our head, and I have confirmation of this from Lotus. Makes ya think, though. -=B-=

Well, there is other evidence that the 2.0L head was a Lotus designed item. I got this bit of information at another old turbo dodge site:
"Was there ever going to be a 2.2 N/A 16V?
Yes. The 2.2 was going to receive two BIG potential changes.
#1) One was the 16v investigation. Most everyone knows of the Hans Hermann head, the lotus, and the Maserati; But Chrysler was investigating the potential for their own package.
The cool part is.. They actually built a proto-type. An even cooler thing is they went into production, with it. Seriously!!!! If you are interested in seeing it, open the hood of an early Neon, with the DOHC. I kid you not!! That's it!! Most of the design was taken directly from the lotus unit. While looking at the Neon engine, squint your eyes and imagine the red colors! You'll see it!!"

So there ya go. Perhaps, Chrysler took a little bit of engineering from a couple of sources. Or maybe Mitsu copied the Lotus head designs as well.

They are on paper In real life the lack of adapted rods and the way the skirts are made make them very hard to put to put in the 2.0L however on the 2.4L the same pistons with the longer rod of the 2.5 it becomes very pratical and economic to do I don't think the srt-4 internals will be better in the 2.0L for the same reason than above
But let's face it, right now with the price of the internals beeing so ridicuosly low it's a good thing to buy them and think later about what you will do with them When you see low milleage 2.4 stratus engine selling for $500 and for $250 you have stage III internals (as of 2 days ago mind you) add another $100 for a full bearing set, another $200 for a full gasket set and you're getting very close to howell's rebuilt price except that 1 you have 20% more displacement, 2 you could buy a 2.0L head and oil pan used, and sell you complete 2.0L engine to recover a big part of the price you spent

So, does that mean that the 4g63 Head will fit? because EVERYTHING i've ever heard indicates otherwise.

The 420A DOHC head is identical to the 2.4 Head, but it is NOT a copy of the 4g63 head. Much different.
Also, the 2.0 oil pan will not fit on the 2.4, much different mounting pattern and depth, since the 2.4 has balance shafts which take up a lot of space in the pan. Or in my case, the trash can ;) hehe.
And a full bearing kit is only $60, if that.

Funny, my new balance shafts are sitting in the trash pan too. :D -=B-=

So, let me get this straight: I can buy a piston/rod combo for $50 a pop? Thats $200 for the set. Will this directly fit into the 420a that's in my Eclipse right now? Futhermore, can I just use the pistons/rings from them?

>>>Will this directly fit into the 420a that's in my Eclipse right now? <<<
Not unless you have a 2.4L in there.
