Anyone know the differences? why are the units in our cars called alternators when the ones used for hardcore car stereos are called generators?

If i remember correctly.. a generator produces direct current (DC), while an alternator produces alternating current, and rectifies it into direct current.

Back in the old days (like the 1960s) cars had generators which were essentially alternators which were not very efficient. Usually they put out only 6 volts. Alternators replaced generators because they produced electricity more efficiently.

so why do people use generators when they are building amonster audio system? is it purely for the DC current?
