31787, Car won't start. Need help ASAP!!!
Posted by 420aVenger, Sep-03-02 12:35 PM
Ok my car is stranded and I'm going to go try and fix it in the morning so I really need help fast. I drove it to where it sits now and it drove fine. I shut it off and it hasn't started since. The engine cranks over fine and normal. The plugs are covered in gas when I pull them. I had the plugs out on the end of the wire and they are firing good (blue spark) It doesn't even try to kick over, just cranks. We tried while it was warm and completely cold and it won't start either way. Since it's cranking, sparking, and getting gas I can only assume that it's a bad sensor keeping it from firing up. I had the same thing happen to my old car and the problem was the crank sensor. I do have an extra so I'm going to try that first thing. Does that sound like the culprit? Can you guys think of ANYTHING else to try or anything else that could be wrong?

If there's a lot of gas on your spark plugs, that usually means that you're probably run very rich (spark plugs flooded.) This used to happen to my car, but that was thanks to the Accel DFI:\ Try this:

Pull all the plugs, disconnect the fuel pump somehow (pulling the relay or the fuel pump power connector), then crank the engine for a few seconds to rid the cylinder of access fuel. Reinstall the plugs and reconnect the fuel pump's power, then crank the engine. If that works, it'll let you take the car home; and that'll also means that you're running way rich, especially at idle.

I suspect the crank sensor

Ok I did what you said and it started. This is what it does everytime. I will crank it and nothing. Then I disconnect the fuel pump fuse and crank it and it fires up and runs for like 5 seconds. Then I put the fuse back in and crank and nothing again. The plugs aren't getting soaked anymore but they do get carboned up REAL fast. It has to be dumping way too much fuel for it to do that. I'm going to hook up the stock pump tomorrow and if I have to put the stock injectors back in. Does that sound like it would help? I can't think of anyhting else to do.

Fuel pressure regulator. You're washing down the cylinder walls with fuel. The only reason why it started back up in the first place was because the cylinder walls completely dried out.

I would get it towed to a shop. Drain the oil and see if it's the consistancy of water. If enough fuel got down past the rings, you'll know. This can be a potentially bad situation for your motor. Don't futz with it too long before having someone with LOTS of tools look at it.

Re-read the post right above yours. It fires right up as soon as I disconnect the pump. No time to dry out, just burn off.

Matt, whats your fuel pressure?

It's about 40 static and 30 idle. I've tried turning the screw almost all the way out and it doesn't help. Especially since I can't see what I'm truning it to.

So can you see the pressure gauge, or no? Only thing I can think of is that maybe your SFMU, isnt bleeding off any fuel pressure, or not enough, causeing way too much fuel pressure, and too much fuel..you know exactly what fuel pressure you got? that will really help..

If you say that your idle fuel pressure is between 30 and 40 psi and you have 30 lb injectors, I wouldnt think that would be enough fuel at all to do that. I wonder if you have one or more injectors locked open and dumping in waaay to much fuel...

Well I can't tell my fuel pressure because the car won't start. When the car actually ran I had 30psi idle and 40psi static. I think I'm going to put in the stock injectors and fuel pump to rule both those out. But you would shit if you could see how long this think runs w/ the fuel pump disconnected. And that's after the engine only CRANKS for a couple seconds. Not even running. It's dumping a crazy amount of fuel.

you should be able to see what the fuel pressure is when your cranking the engine. i bleieve it should be atlest 40 (stock injectors) when turning it over.

Well I have the stock pump and injectors in. It was running really good for a little while w/ 30psi idle. That is about the only way it will run. I know it's low but any higher and it floods out. Is the 8.5 compression making it use a lot less guess or what?

*edit* and it's cranking around 38psi but I have to fight like hell to get it to hold an idle.

Hmmm...with 30 psi on stock injectors and pump that motor should barely even run...pressure should be around 45-55 psi for a good idle fuel pressure.. Let me ask you this. Where is your tap for the fuel pressure gauge?? Are you reading FUEL RAIL pressure?? It just sounds liek your fuel pressure regulator is feeding way too much fuel for some reason, and maybe your fuel pressure gauge isnt reading correctly or not on the fuel rail itself..wierd...i guess double check that, and check the vacum line connection from the intake mani all the way to the fuel pressure regulator to be sure thats fine.. It just sounds like a FPR problem..

with your stock injectors in set your static to about 55psi.. if it runs well then it might be your aftermarket injectors? check the resistence on those #30 injectors or so and they should be fairly close in #s... yah try that crank sensor deal...hmmm

I have been working on that thing for the past 3 days. I've used both springs. And that static screw has been pretty much all the way in and out and it doesn't make much difference. Does anyone think it may be the computer? It's just weird because on the way to get to where it was stranded it ran pretty good on the #30's and Walbro. Now it's just all messed up. But anyways the gauge should be reading rail pressure. Here's where it is. You can see it on the side of the SFMU.

BTW I think my alternator is dead. When we unplug the battery while it's running it dies. Also my dad's brand new battery got completely drained in a 25 miles drive (yes we did drive it home w/ 20psi idle pressure) Could the ignition not be firing hot enough or something because of the alternator? Thanks for all the help so far guys. I REALLY appreciate it.

Oh yeah, that can cause many probs! IF the voltage sags too low, the coil pack may not fire, or fire very poorly...could be the cause of all your problems..not to mention too low voltgage going to the fuel pump...If you alt is bad, then the battery light should be on in the car...

The light was on for a couple days but now it's off. Maybe it burned out.
