31607, Just installed my ported and polished head and intake manifold Posted by Kahn, Sep-01-02 03:19 AM
Umm.. in a word - FAST!
Two questions 1) I am currently burning off the 89 gas -- seems to run fine though - odd.
2) Is the computer adjusting for this even though I have a higher compression ration?
A comment: I need a bored throttle body in a bad way -- the car starts to scream at 4500 all the way up - this is really a top end mod but damn is the top end nice.
Anyways -- thanks for the help guys.

Isn't there different stages you can go with??? as far as P&P goes?
What stage did you go with? How much did it cost? How would this do with about 15 psi???

Well - I got a pretty good deal on the port and polish plus 5 angle valve job - it was 350 -- that including disassembling + reassembling the head and 2 new valves.
I guess you would say I got a stage one -- I told him I did not want any error codes or funky idles - so he opened it up / smoothed it out quite a bit though -- I can probably post some pics.
As far as cost for you -- haven't a clue - on a side bar I do have an extra cylinder head lying around now -- so any takers???
Complete - cams and all - which means you can send your cams off to be reground whatever.
Let me know guys.

Mitsu says 87 octane is just fine.
>2) Is the computer adjusting for this even though I have a >higher compression ration?
The computer will adjust the fuel mostly based on the a/f ratio at the o2 sensor. You should be just fine with the stock feul system even if your running a very high compression ratio.
My question to you is - what is your compression ratio? If you just did a p&p, then your compression ratio is stock - 9.6:1. If you had the head milled then it would be higher. You made no mention of milling the head...just the p&p. No matter what compression ratio you have the stock fuel(computer) system should be allright - as long as you are NA. If your compression ratio IS higher - you will have to run higher octane feul. Make sense?

Milled the head .030 -- not sure what the exact compression ratio would be on that but I am guessing 10.2?? Someone have a calculation to figure this out?
As far as was it worth it? Yes -- nice little umph --- I would not do it if you weren't already going to be changing the head gasket or doing the timing belt though - its A LOT of work.
Oh on a side note -- I blew 180 on all four cylinders when I did my compression test :-)

About 10.4:1 compression. I'd run premium from now on although it might not be absolutely necessary.

I've got my ported cylinder head on the car now as well. I screwed up and got the wrong cam profile and messed up a valve seat on cylinder #1. Although you couldn't tell from the compression or leakdown test. 200 across all 4 and 12% +/- 2% on the leak down, but that was with 150psi air pressure.
I've got my head milled to produce 10.6:1 compression. Port matched the intake and exhaust manifolds and ported the intake manifold. I've also got 1mm oversized intake valves, 3-angle valve grind, Crane valve springs, PT rockers and lifters.
The cams should be back in the car on the 13th or 14th and should have new timeslips within a week of that. Given that I can just touch up the valve seat and pop the cylinder head back on quick enough.
It's become a pretty serious race to see who can get into the 14s first.

Yep. I would run the premium as well - You should be fine on 89 though.
