31534, 2.4L over Forged Internals Posted by tacoman123, Aug-31-02 07:14 AM
I have a question...
I was reading up on the Mexican Stratus R/Ts, which have the factory turboed 2.4L 420As..
They run at .9 Bar stock, which is about 12~13 psi right?
Does anyone know how high of a boost they would last before they break down?
Could the 2.4L bottom end be a cheaper alternative to forged internals?
Thanks

why not get the 2.4 WITH forged internals.... thats what i am working on right now }>

>why not get the 2.4 WITH forged internals.... thats what i >am working on right now }>
Haha, that would be best :-).. But not everyone has like over a thousand (1000 or 1k) dollars in their pocket :-) ...
Also, many people won't make internals for the 2.4L would they? Because...
Since the 420A in the 2.0L is in many cars, like in Neons, Avengers, Stratuses, well the cloud cars, and in Eclipses/Talons and in Hyundai's (I've heard), while the only place I know the 2.4L is in is the Mexican Stratus R/T, and Neon R/T.
Anyways, where can I get the internals for the 2.4L?
And how much can stock ones resist? Since I heard those have alot more strength than the ones we have.

What about the mexican 420A 2.4Ls? :-)
Thanks

I would go with the mexican 2.4L block if you can get one at a good price. If not, get some 2.5L rods. There price very well.

Stock or aftermarket 2.5L rods? Thanks

31541, RE: 2.4L over Forged Internals Posted by HeartOfDarkness, Aug-31-02 03:22 PM
I don't know if they make aftermarket 2.5L rods. Acording to bstockum, the 2.5L rods are good under 500 hp. He saids he bought them for under 45.00 each. Yet, the 2.5L rods need to be re-bushed to fix.

JE can make any sized piston you want.
|
31543, RE: 2.4L over Forged Internals Posted by tacoman123, Aug-31-02 04:07 PM
How much would it cost to have JE make some custom pistons?
And, would the rods change the compression?
Is the 2.4L bottom end the same 10.6:1 compression? I thought it would be more logical to have it lower in compression, as some are factory turboed (the mexican Stratus R/Ts).
Thanks

Also..
They were talking about the 2.5L rods..
Are these the ones from the early Mopars?
Are these from the 2.5L V6 found in some late model cloud cars?..
If it is from the 2.5L V6 in the late model cloud cars, I thought they had the 6G72 with a shorter stroke so its a 2.5L and not a 3.0L.
Since the 6G72 is a Mitsu and the 420A is a Chrysler, the rods won't bolt-on into ours, would it?
Thanks

The 2.5L rods are from/for a 2.5L I-4 used in the Dodge Dayton and other Chrysler cars in the early 90's.
The 2.4L does not have a compression of 10.6:1 it will be more in the range of 9.6:1. With the turbo pistons probably down in the 8.6:1 range.

Well, the 2.5L motor being discussed here is the old 2.5L Turbo motor made by Chrysler. This is, in turn, based on the slightly earlier 2.2L Turbo motor, also made by Chrysler. The 2.5L Turbo motor has two incarnations, Turbo I and Turbo II. Without going into a history lesson on turbo Mopars, there is one major difference between the two that matters to us. Turbo I are the short rod engines. The Turbo II motors are called long rod (get your mind out of the gutter!). In this case, though, a longer rod is better (it always is... LOL). A shorter rod will be at more of an angle at +90 degrees or +270 degrees, well, because it is shorter. A longer rod will reach further up the cylinder, making it's angle a little bit less intense. This allows for power transfer to the crank on a straighter line. It is all about the tangent lines, folks. Turbo II rods and pistons are the way to go, once they are bushed for full floating pin. Another issue with these internals is that they lower the compression ratio to 7.9:1 or so. Perfect for forced induction, though! Can always have the block decked to make it back up, anyways. The lower compression ratio is due to the piston comes way short of the deck.nota problem, just not as good off boost. Then again, any motor with 101.3MM of stroke will be decent off boost. -=B-=

yeah, what they said. :)
I would go with the 2.5L rods and forged Wisecos pistons. :)

31548, RE: 2.4L over Forged Internals Posted by tacoman123, Sep-01-02 03:45 PM
Do the rods need any special treatment?
Or can I just put in rods from of the shelf like at Autozone, and put it in the 2.4L block?
They don't need to be heat treated or forged do they?
How much boost in psi would they last?
I heard 20 psi, can anyone confirm this?
Thanks

Hyundai used to have mitsubishi engines built under licence in Korea
you could find the 420a 2.4 N/A in the Stratus, Cirrus, Breeze, Sebring convertible, Caravan the newest generation of this engine is the engine of the PT cruiser the head had been redesign a little , apparently it has a better flow 2.4 share the same head casting as the Neon
About the 2.5 now the rods pistons and rings of the 2.5 turbo engine from 1989 to 1993 are a direct drop in in the 420a 2.4 reason beeing that Chrysler designed the first 420a in a way that all their suppliers wouldn't have to retool too much, so we ended up with the same bore as the 2.5 common block there was 2 version of the 2.5 but only one version of the 2.5 turbo starting from 1989 the 2.2 and the 2.5 started to share a common block only the bore would differ, not the stroke anymore, and that's that version of the 2.5 that also got a turbo treatment 2.5 turbo were installed mostly in caravan and some bigger cars while the 2.2 used to be more in sporty cars Peoples like Greg Donovan and the now-gone-too-soon Gus Mahon are/were puhing up to 31 psi on the stock internals of their 2.5 turbo
dropping 2.5 pistons is doable in the 2.4 BUT you would need to have valve pockets made to accomodate the interferentiel design of the head bob Stockum quoted me $220 for a set of pistons with the proper valve pockets, compression would be under 8:1
and of course to top that you will need your 2.0L head to replace the 2.4 head
The mexican 2.4 engine is using the same pistons and rods by the way also the PT TURBO engine will start to sell very soon

Mexican turbo 2.4 run at .9 bar which is, i think,12 psi. So i think 20 psi sounds pretty good, just make sure your fuel system is up to the task. :)

31551, RE: 2.4L over Forged Internals Posted by The1Bill, Sep-02-02 05:33 AM
Gus ran a TON of boost in Slugmobile and had some of the most ingenious methods of boost control. His compression was higher, though, then the turbo rods and pistons would be, in the 2.4L block. That means that with proper fuel support, the 2.4 should be able to safely handle more boost then the stock 2.5L turbo motor. Another thing, I don't really know what the rods on the 2.5L nonturbo look like, or if they would be an upgrade or not, but I do know a bit about the turbo 2.2/2.5L block... Definate upgrade for those of us who swap to the 2.4L block. Thanks for the info! -=B-=

Who's Gus? Is he the guy with the 12 second Caravan MiniVan? I thought he had the 6G72 (3000GT/Stealth motor )instead of the 420A in it.
That's a Mitsu motor, it wouldn't be able to use the 2.5L Chrysler rods would it?
The 2.5L rods by itself would be a down grade instead of using Mitsu internals IMO.
Am I right?

31553, RE: 2.4L over Forged Internals Posted by The1Bill, Sep-02-02 10:34 AM
Gus raced a Plymouth Acclaim and a Dodge Caravan, both with the common block Turbo Mopar motor, not a Mitsubishi motor. The 2.5L internals are stronger then most Mitsubishi stuff, so it would be an upgrade for the 2.5L Mitsubishi motor, which is in the Galant, etc... -=B-=

Who was Gus, since Gus Mahon passed away in a motorcycle accident august 19 2002, and he will be very missed by all the small engines mopar community
Yes he was the owner of one of the 12"s turbo caravan, there's another one in the high 11's outthere And the Turbo Caravan doesn't have a mitsu engine and it's not a 420s engine either since the 2.2/2.5 predated the 420a >That's a Mitsu motor, it wouldn't be able to use the 2.5L >Chrysler rods would it?
The 2.5 turbo IS a Chrysler motor
>The 2.5L rods by itself would be a down grade instead of >using Mitsu internals IMO.
Why would you want to put mitsu internals in another Chrysler engine anyway ? And what makes you think that the 2.5 rod is a downgrade ? any stock cast rod that can take 30 psi of abuse is worth considering They were good enought back in the early 90's in the 2.5 they were good enought to be put back into service in the 2.4 mexican turbo engine in the late 90's and they are still good enought to find their way into the upcomming PT cruiser 2.4 turbo engine

Amen, Alain, Amen. I had the pleasure of knowing Gus. One of the local shops made a memorial decal in his memory. If you are interested, let me know. I have it on my car. $7 per decal, and the profit goes to his estate (to put his daughter through college and to keep Dolores afloat).

It is the one with the Dodge logo that says "GUS" in the middle, but I am going to guess that you figured that out. I have one on each of my fake windows, and I got 2 for Todd (VX-100, who also had the pleasure of Gus' acquaintaince) I am in no way connected to Intricate Lines (the shop putting out the decals), nor am I getting any form of kickback for anything relating to this. End of disclaimer mode. -=B-=

I was talking about the 2.5L in LATE MODEL Chrysler cars, not the early ones. I was talking about the 2.5L V6 in I think the Cirrus, and some other cars.

Not trying to bring back an old post but...
Would those 2.2L bolt on into our cars? Also, can I use both pistons and rods from the T2 in a 2.4L motor?
Thanks

That would be a major job to do, really not a bolt on for once, the 2.2 is reversed like a neon engine
>Also, can I use both pistons and rods from the T2 in a 2.4L >motor?
Yes if you have a machine shop mill 4 small valves pockets in the pistons , bob stockum can sell you a set already milled for $220

Just as a heads up guys.. HowellAutomotive has 2.4 Turbo Pistons that are forged and also instock.. They worked to have these made as the new SRT-4 and GT Cruiser have Cast Pistons and will not handle a ton of boost. These Forged Pistons will be able to handle alot of boost. Good luck trying to find a Mexi Stratus 2.4 and getting it over the boarder... You best bet would be to get a 2.4 cheap out of a wrecked strat or minivan or even a PT and use that for a killer buildup. Always remember if your gonna do something like turbo do it right from the bigining.. Nothing worse than build a nice turbo setup but not have the internals to handle the boost.. Good Luck..
You can find the pistons here.
