When I first start it, or sitting at a stop light, my cars idle will drop real low, and most times die. After I've been driving it for a while, like 10-15 min, it usually quits and runs normal.

I've checked the plugs, changed the vac line that connects to the throttle body, and did a compression test not too long ago, and everything seems fine. I thought it might have been the vac line due to it being cracked, but it's still dying on me. I was thinking of cleaning my tb, or that it might be the tb gasket. Any other suggestions?

Since you have trouble with idle, I suggest you check out the Idle Air Control motor. I would remove the TB and manually clean it with TB cleaner and a toothbrush (remove the electronics first). Then, manually clean the piston of the IAC motor. It gets gunked up with carbon, goo, etc. While you're at it, check the resistance of the IAC coils with a multimeter (like the pic below). Put the TB back on with a new gasket (if necessary).

I would definetly do what Corbin said to do first but if that doesn't fix it, do you know someone with the same ECU as you? I had a problem just like yours, it sounds like, and I checked everything and it still did it. Finally I hooked up a friend's ECU and all my problems were gone. There's probably a really good chance that it is not your ECU but I figured that I would just throw my experience out there to you. Good luck finding your problem.

Are the 96 and the 98 ECU the same?

did this prob progress over time, in other words did the rpms used to drop in small amounts at first, and over some time it drops all the way? b/c if it was like that, I'd think the fuel filter or the plug wires. I dunno, just another idea here. Good luck :)

mine would die down when I pulled to stop lights, etc. It was the ooutput speed sensor. I am auto tho.

I had the problem when I first got the car in February. We checked the plugs, gapped them, put them back, and cleaned the TB, and it was fixed. Now I'm having the problem again. It started about 2 weeks ago with a ± 200 rpm fluxuation after I checked my compression and added my GS-T muffler, and now its dying occasionally. This morning it didn't die, just dropped low in the rpms, and I had no trouble on the way home tonight.

Thanks for the suggestions that you've given so far, I'll try them out this weekend and let ya know what works.

hey 9d9rs where is the output speed sensor located? I am auto too and when i pull up to a red light, my car idles down really low and cause it to idle rough. how do you test the output speed sensor?

I had this same thing happen to me in my 98', I took it to the dealership. They charged me alot of money to run the tests and they "said" they put new spark plugs in it but it still ran like crap. So I bought NGK plugs and since then she's been running great!

are you showing any cels?

Nope, no cels. I'm still idling low, but no dying on me for the past 24 hours.

check ur fuel pump under you seat rear seat. maybe it got loose somehow. Thats what happaned to mine, took it to a shop thinking something was wrong with the engine and the guy goes,. "has anybody been messing with ur feul pump?" i was like, "no why"

"well your connector is off"


simple fix, just put the connector back on. But for some reason my connector sux ass and comes off from time to time still.

Actually, check your battery.

Yes, sounds strange, but low idling problems can be caused by a battery going bad. Especially if the car drives around normally and then then wants to stall when it comes to a stop. I've seen it happen in three different cars (a LeBaron convertable, my Saturn, and an Olds 88). Seems when the battery goes bad it messes up the whole electrical system of the car (probably due to the affect it has when it's resistance changes) and for some reason (I'm not sure why) the car wants to stall when you go from driving around to idle.

Now the wierd part. I'm having no trouble now. Its gradually gotten better and better over the past couple days, and today it was running like normal.

the car didn't want to run at all, and wanted to cut off. It had a cel. If you have a bad sensor, usually something pops up, unless your CEL is burnt out or unplugged.
