31208, what's the deal w/ the msd coil pack Posted by 97eclipseRS, Aug-27-02 12:32 PM
i'm a 97 and i've heard they only work w/ 95-96, or you need something to make it work w/ 97+. what is needed to make it compatible? do any other companies sell 97+ coils packs, and where is the cheapest place to get them? i know i can get the oem one, but it's more expensive. tia

Right now the MSD pack only works with 95-96 cars, cause the 97+ has a new style connector. You can go to the junkyard and buy the connector, then the pack would work on 97+. If you arent in a rush, MSD is scheduled to be coming out with the 97+ pack soon.

hmmm that sucks, i kinda needed one soon. any idea of when they're coming out? what part of the connector is needed to make it compatible? from the pic on their site it looks like the connector is on the left side, while i think the 97+ is on the right.

dayam for real!? It just plugs right in on a 95-96? I thought you needed to buy that goofy harness for all 2GNTs.

There was a recall or something on the old style connectors, cause they came out too easy. So they made a connector that stayed in place better. To see if you have the newer connector, go out, look at the connector, and if it has a little red locking clip, then it is new. If all you have to do it pretty much pull it off, then its old.
The old clip is the only one that works with the MSD coil.
You can cut that old clip off a car in the junkyard and it will work.

i just got off the phone w/ msd and they said that the 97+ coil w/ the new connector will be out mid september and that they can be ordered through any of the dealers listed on msd's site, but they'll be on backorder until they're released. the p/n is 8239 whereas the 95-96 p/n is 8229.
