okay i have a dilemma here, is the phantom grip worth it? or should i just spend the extra cash and get that quaife? I am going to replace my clutch soon so i was thinking i might as well do something about the diff. is it a pain in the ass to install either of these or is each about the same amount of labor. or should i just forget about buying a new diff and just pull the stock diff to weld thepin inplace?

from what i hear on here the phantom has some bugs and problems so Most people i bet would say get the quafie.

It just depends how much power your putting down now, and how much you plan to put down in the future. If you upgrade to the quaife, you can throw whatever at it and it will take it... forever.. hehe. but its a lot of money. The install is simple and can be done by yourself with a few dealer parts, and a press, or take it to a machine shop to have the bearings pressed on the diff, then do the rest yourself... I bought my quaife in a group buy thing for 1150 shipped from nleonline.com, that was the cheapest i could find it anywhere. Good luck.

Dont weld them together!!!! There will be no speed difference between inner and outer tires when going around turns. That is not a good thing.

ummm, i think you misunderstand me, weld the "DIFF PIN" not the diff. who would be stupid enough to weld a diff together on a street car.

i'm going to boost 15 psi on 8.8, so i'm, thinking like 350-375 HP. i think i may just wait and get the quaife.

i didn't want to spend 1100+ bucks for the quaife so i went with the phantom grip. i am still breaking the engine in so i can't give you any feedback on how it preforms. I did some research over at one of the neon boards and they all seemed to like it alot.

I heard phantom grip is only good for straight line or doing burnouts. Quaife is the whole diff unit so its a real LSD. Quaife is better for the corners :)

Greg has the phantom grip and he runs 12's. I guess it holds up to quite a bit of HP.

I wouldnt follow greg's example though. 1 may survive for awhile on high boost, but it wont forever. And when it fails and you have to buy a new tranny and pay for all the labor involved to throw it in, and then you will need the quaife cause you just found out the stock diff isnt the best unit in the world anyways... so my advice is do it right the first time. If you plan to be 350hp+ and keep the car, I'd get the quaife. Its going to handle better, hookup better, and guaranteed to last you for the life of the car.

I really shouldn't be someone who can properly speak for either route. But I will anyways! ;-) The Quaife is without a doubt the way to go in terms of "best" performance, quality, and longevity.

However, from the research that I've done on both 4g63's, neons, and from what I've seen generally from my own eyes in regard to the PG, I would NOT discount it as merely a low-cost, cheap frills band-aid replacement for the Quaife.

The Neon guys like it so much that one of their guys produces it on the side.

Lastly, while at the Auto show in Chicago this year, you might have noticed some engine and tranny cutouts they have in various cars. Anyways, I remember reading how the PG is in fact something that's commonly used as a STOCK LSD in corvettes in such. Well, I was in fact able to view such a setup in a corvette differential using the very same PG design with the two thick metal plates and springs. So the PG isn't a fad, or silly frill or anything of the like. It's a legitimate type of limited slip differential that I believe should be strongly considered. Again, the Quaife is probably a much better alternative, but at $1200....you really have to weigh the alternatives out there.

Yeah, the design is pretty sound, but the limiting factor is still the stock diff. I say the conversion my friend is making up, and the phantom grip are good ideas, and great for the low budget, lower boost racer, but when putting down more than 350hp to the wheels on our trannies, its time to do some thinking.

Of course, I used to run 22psi on the stock diff, but then again, all it did was smoke 1 tire off, so I wasnt really putting a lot of traction down.

btw: my idea of low boost is ~18psi and below.
