30833, Anyone whose done the final drive gear mod......
Posted by 97_ESi, Aug-23-02 06:59 AM
Ummm... isn't it only ONE gear? I order the final drive gear off the 99 Stratus and low and behold I got 2 gears....is this right? Or did I end up getting both gears???

Thanks

Yes.

Alright I'm doing this mod this afternoon. Guys please help some more. So I use both Stratus gears or just one? Secondly how much auto tranny fluid will I lose? Should I go out and buy some because I'll have to top it off?

Thanks.

i hope you read up more into this mod before getting into it.. cause it sounds like you aren't prepared.. If i remember right you'll have to drop the tranny and split the case (loose all tranny fluid) and gears in trannies always come in pairs because they are constantly meshed and you get the different ratio's by changing the size of both gears in a single set of gears. such as.. 1st gear is actually a SET of two gears, same with the rest of the gears and the 'final drive gear' .

Thanks Breezio - naw I read up on it for like 2 months. It's just the how-to makes it seem like I loose barely any fluid - or at least how I read it.

And don't worry, I got a bunch of "car guys" helping me too, so I don't mess up :D

Last question is, what torque did you guys torque the bolts too?

If I remember correctly the how to from Robert of ASOG it's 200 pounds of torque

what??? you don't have to drop the tranny. this is a 1 hour mod more or less. You cant possibly drop the tranny, modify it, and then put it back in anywhere close to an hour. I thought the website showed you how to do it. Read that first completely before doing anything.

Nah, its a one hour mod. No dropping the tranny on this one....you just go to the drive gears sitting in the front fender.

It's ALL on this link-> http://www.geocities.com/rbsounddesigns//finaldrivemod.html

Shouldn't this go in the things we've seen B4 thread?

It can now....but that link doesn't answer the torque specs and how much tranny fluid you would need.

that's cause on this mod you torque it in there, and drive around listening to it, if there's rattling....not in there all the way, if not, you're golden.

there should be a certan tq spec for it. It's 2 gears, the driven gear, and the drive gear. I would do this, but the dealers say they don't have a drb3 or whatever the tool is to change tire/wheel specs.

Well its all done - total time took 5 1/2 hours!! Its pretty simple to do in aspect but to do it, its a bitch. It is damn near impossible to get those gears off, let alone drain all the tranny fluid too!! Thanks to an awesome friend though its all finished. I expected more torque with this mod but running 16's (tires) I can only sqwuak the tires at some intersections. However the getup and go is definetly better, I love my car so much now...expecially if you go around a corner at like 20 km/h then pin it as you come out - the car is amazing!!!!

Also my speedo is still off, so my acceleration might be alot better too!

Well worth the money and time!!!

Now how much would a transgo shift kit help me??? Could I beat a 5spd with the same mods?

well I was guessing about the tranny drop thing.. I never read the how-to because I don't have a 2gnt ;) hehe. sorry for any confusion I may have caused.
