30628, Tranny Cooler or not?
Posted by 97_ESi, Aug-20-02 08:56 AM
Alright I just finished ordering the Final Drive Gear from the Dodge Stratus so I can do the Final Drive Gear mod. Lots of people keep saying I need a tranny cooler while other people not....well what is it? It's not like I'm a full fledged race car here :D My cars a daily driver that sometimes likes to race or be driven hard. Is it that bad if I don't buy the tranny cooler?? I only plan on doing the drive gear mod and nothing else to the tranny....my thought was that if you are going to a shiftkit or torque converter THEN you need the cooler.

Thanks

no, as far a i know it is not necessary. even with the shift kit you wouldn't need it. i thought lazy/long shifts cause harmful heat to the tranny and if the transgo shortens shifts then it is a reason in itself to not need it. but you only need it with a higher stall TC. anyone help if they know anything else.

i think u hit the nail on the head...they are only neccessary if your putting out far over stock hp, or a higher stall speed torque converter which would dump more heat into the tranny....With stock or close to stock output then i dont see why you would need a tranny cooler.

How much?

Got 'em directly from Chrysler for $200 with tax - also remember this is a Canadian price. They should be here early next week - hopefully it will be installed late next week, if everything goes right. I'll try to do a GTech 1/4 miler time before and after.

Go with a tranny cooler! you'll be running higher rpms with the gear mod. And for $30.00 you can't do wrong. Heat is what breaks down the tranny fluid and then wears the clutch packs. If your gonna spend $200 canadian for gears what's a couple extra dollars to keep the tranny cooler. The only down side is if you drive your car in the winter. You'll need to disconnect the secondary cooler during the winter. Otherwise the fluid won't get to operating temp.

You should be able to buy a tranny cooler at any good autoparts store for $40. Check out www.summitracing.com and www.jegs.com too. Also, I believe the tranny has some sort of temp switch that will not circulate fluid if it is too cold. Don't quote me on that, though.
