30523, Mods for Street Racing in Auto 2gNT Posted by fadegs, Aug-19-02 03:17 PM
We all know auto 2gNTs are slow, and the best mod you can probably do is to get a transmission swap, but I was thinking perhaps with the right bolt ons, these can be made to be fairly respectable. So far, I've installed a CAI and gst muffler, next up is an UDP and the final drive mod (thanks Bill!). I would like to tune my car more for street racing (which rarely stretch to 1/4 mile). With that said, which additional mods would you guys recommend? What are the pros/cons of the following:
1. Headers (4-1 or 4-2-1?) 2. Ported intake manifold (where do I get this done?) 3. Test pipe 4. Shift Kit (Transgo) 5. Bored Throttle Body
And to all those who are NT Auto, what mods do you think made the most difference? And would you consider it even worth going the NA route with an auto?
Thanks!

Auto will lose to almost anything modified on the street in NA form.
Get nitrous or turbocharge your car :) Get a nice turbo that will spool VERY quick because our autos have NOTHING up to 30mph.

I agree with robo...If ya wanna go fast, get a turbo. You can do all the bolt on mods you can, but you will never see the ture power unless you got a turbo. Unless you are really serious into making you car fast, dont waste your money on header, CAI, ect...Unlike some people think, those bolt ons wont make you fast, they make you slightly faster than stock, wich still aint dat fast. You wanna win races and be fast, you need HORSEPOWER my friend. A turbo is where you get it :thumbsup

Well, there are 2 swaps I would do to make it perfect for that purpose. One of them is the MT swap. The other is a 2.4L swap. Other then that, it takes nitrous and or a turbo to make an A/T 2GNT fast. -=B-=

Hi guys, thanks for all the help. Just to clarify, by street racing I only mean racing with my friends on the streets. I'm not into the whole organized street racing scene. I consider myself a responsible driver and so far (knock on wood) haven't had a single accident or gotten pulled over by police...:D
I think Bill's right. To truly be fast I'll be needing some major swaps. I'm leaning towards the nitrous route for now. It seem slike a cheap alternative to getting a turbo.
If anyone has any more info on the mods I listed that'd be great too. I'm still interested to see what kind of mods would benefit an auto NT.
Thanks again!

Just practice trying different things to try and pull every ounce of power out with the auto. I found that if I get the rpm's up to right at redline, let off and stomp it, all in 1 motion, I can chirp 2nd. Since so many people don't believe that, I am going to make a sound recording of it REAL soon. If you do it going downhill, u get bad torque steer tho. Not sure if it's good on ur tranny, but I have been playing around with the method for a few months now, and no problems.

Iv'e chirped 3rd....w/ almost 19 PSI though....hehe....but yeah,Nitrous is cheap,Turbo is cool....the money you spend w/ a swap I'd rather get a turbo...

Well, this swap isn't costing me a whole lot of money. I got the whole motor for 550 bux, am selling the manifolds and head for 350 (for all 3), I bought a header, which I didn't need to, 10 bux for a muffler shop to lengthen the downpipe part, and an AFC (275 bux). Let me add this all up... 275 + 10 + 550 - 350 = 535 bux. About 500 dollars for the equivilant of 5 pounds of boost on a 2.0L. Not a bad deal... And, if (when) I do decide to go turbo, I will have more displacement, and Mopar factory internals that I can use that are good for up to 550 HP (2.5L Turbo II rods, pistons, and rings) and they drop my compression to 8:1. Not a bad investment, if you ask me. -=B-=

pull the tranny, and rebuild it with higher gears and get a high stall torque converter. you can do the right things with the AT and be fast, you just gotta know what your doing.

Tranny rebuilds and motor swaps can be costly if you're not experienced and doing it yourself. And since it sounds like your on a budget like most of us here I suggest this; 50-75shot wet, test pipe and custom catback with a straight through muffler to get that nitrous out. AFX underdrive pulley and you should be all set.
