30455, Fuel injector cleaners? Octane boosters?? Posted by weepul, Aug-19-02 09:16 AM
What's the deal with these? Can the cleaners really save me from going to Satan and getting the injectors cleaned? Do most cleaners have an octane boost built in to stimulate added performance? Would an octane booster with 93 octane gas be effecient?

Correct me if Im wrong someone but to my knowledge our injectors are supposed to me self cleaning, thats what I was told when I inquired about it at satan. remember to change your fuel filter, sometimes depending on where u get gas you can periodically pick some bad gas*literally* flters are supposed to be changed about every 30k, if you are using 93 octane pump gas that should be good especially if u are not turboed-as for the octane booster, I only use it when I cant find 93, but the STP fuel injector cleaner probably won't hurt if u use a bottle @ every oil change. And if ur not using sythetic oils I would recommend a bottle of slick fifty at ur next oil change. ;)

Ok, Fact: Pump gasoline already has "injector cleaner" and "octane booster" in it. The pumps around here have stickers that say "this gasoline contains MTBE" (octane booster) "with Techron" "with Pro-Power" etc. (injector cleaner).
Opinion: Octane boosters/inj cleaners are a total waste of money since it's already in your gas. Its a really sucessful marketing campaign/fear tactic to take advantage of unwitting consumers.
Make your own! I have made a couple batches of this octane boost, and it worked great:
o 100 oz of toluene for octane boost (buy at a paint store, it's paint thinner) o 25 oz of mineral spirits (cleaning agent) o 3 oz of transmission fluid (lubricating agent)
This product is advertised as "octane booster with cleaning agent *and* lubricating agent!". Diesel fuel or kerosene can be substituted for mineral spirits and light turbine oil (or marvel magic oil) can be substituted for transmission fluid. Color can be added with petroleum dyes.
(I mixed mine 1 gallon booster to 3 gallons of 92 octane pump gas which gave me about 99 octane total)

I've heard about using toulene. Isn't that what the f1 cars used to use? Its also one of the key ingredients in TNT (Tri-Nitro-toulene (?)) . I thought though that we shouldnt use it because doesnt toulene eat rubber and synthetic material? maybe i'm mistaken, but that's what i know. I've also heard that it's ok to use if you upgrade all the hoses in your fuel system to aluminum.
