I was driving along on the highway at about 85 when I smelled some slight burning, I looked down at my gauges and noticed that my temp gauge was on its way to the H side of things. I immediately hit the hazards pulled over and cut the car off. As I was coming to a stop a bunch of steam came pouring from my hood. Well I opened it up and turned on the ac (w/o engine on so the fan would run), once it cooled down I limped it to a gas station where it was smoking again. When I popped the hood this time the steam was still coming out and i noticed that it was coming from the upper radiator hose and that it had a crack in it, that explains the shitload of coolant all over my hood and engine bay. So I ghetto rigged it and filled the radiator and overflow bottle with water and let the car cool down for a bit. Now my question is is it possible that any permanent damage was done. None of the warning lights in the car came on and I let the car cool as much as possible before moving it again (and it ran like it always did once i moved it), but would it still mess things up? TIA

It's possible, extreme heat can warp things, etc.

Check for any other leaks, and do a compression test to make sure everything is okay.

it's probably nothing, i had the same problem, when i didn't used the car for 2 or 3 days, after driving it for around 15 mins, the upper radiator hose would POP off, i put 1 litter of water in there fix the hose and went to work. well after work i got out and forgot about the car needing water until i say the gauge in the H zone, i headed for the nearest water source, and with the car on i put watter in, went home and the car was fine...

overheating is the worst you can do to your car, but you did the right thing and took care of it pretty quick for i can tell, so you shouln't worry.

one thing you will notice is that you will need to put gas sooner then you expected, my uneducated guess, is that when it overheated the car started to dump more fuel (or evaporated it :rolleyes )and my fuel lasted half the normal time.

I've heard that the last thing you wanna do when you overheat is turn the car off right away. Someone told me that when you overheat, pull to the side of the road, keep the engine idling, and turn on the heater full blast. This way, it'll open up the thermostat and gush coolant in. Unless, the reason why you overheat is you blew a hose or something.

well I had ZERO coolant in my car so its a good thing that I shut it off. I did turn the AC on though so the extra fan would come on, cooling the engine off
