that is probably what he charges to rebuild a damn V8, you dont need to replace the cranks in our cars like you do in those dinosaur engines. If you cant find anyone to do it cheaper I would say, definitely go for Howell's block

Get a Chilton's manual and do it yourself. The book runs through engine rebuild set by step. If you can read and have some common sense you'll do fine. It may take you longer than having someone else do it but I have more time than money! Good luck and just take your time.

Yeah, 4400 is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay to much. Don't know where you live but for that price I'll buy you another engine, rebuild it, bring it to you, and install it ;) LOL

people that dont pull their own head and block and take it to a machine shop are either A. short on time or B. crazy!. Cause if your paying for more than machine shop costs, your overpaying... just think of all the rest of the 4400 bucks thats not machine costs... which is most of that probably, lol... but you could definately put that money to better use...

guys i understand what you're saying i'll get the chilton's you can download it somewhere but w/2 full time jobs is kinda hard to find time to work on my car and also this is my only car how about down time
there's someone here on this board who's selling a head but if you do the math is 250(head)+1095+shipping(kit)+300 for machine shop+200 valve job that's like 1800
anyone in new mexico who could help me

You could buy a completely rebult shortblock ready for 500 HP from Howell shipped for ~$2100.

Get the head slapped on, and you're ready to go.

That it is totally way too much. Seems like he is charging you what he usually charges for V8s. What exactly did you want done? 420A motors aren't even priced at 4400. Go get another quote from another shop.

thanks for all your help i've been in this board for a couple of months now and i've learn more than in two years of owning the car

umm....you can download the chiltons? where? that would have been helpful when i had my car, but i'd still like to have it, for future use..hehe

and yeah. that's too much. you should spend all of the money on upgraded parts and bum a ride to work and back until you can get the money for the machine shop and install it yourself. find someone who can loan you the tools. then you'd be ready for boost and power!

Well it may not be too much if you think about it...

~ $800 for labor to remove engine from car
~ $800 for long block assembly (clean, flux, balance, torque plate bore, etc etc)
~ $500 for new forged pistons and rings
~ 400-900 for forged rods (eagle or crower)
~ $200 for head
~ $250 or maybe less for new crank (if you really need one)
~ $250 or more (including shipping) for a spare block (if you really need one)
~ $100-300 for drivetrain parts if you need them (cam, valvesprings, lifters, etc).
~ $400+ for new melling oil pump, new head gasket kit, water pump, gaskets, seals, etc (and taht's from a discount dealer!)

So i'm already up to about 3400+. I'm sure there are things missing. The point is, I dont believe 4800 to be a lot but it also depends on WHAT it includes as well. Get everything ON PAPER from them before you give any money to them.

I mean, i am just spending about 1300$ JUST on misc parts to recondition my engine and new pistons and machine shop costs. And I do all my labor as far as taking engine out and reassembling the long block...

howell sells complete bottom end rebuild kits for $1100. everything, pistons, rods, rings, gaskets, oil pump, bearings.

actual rebuild labor should only cost 250-750 depending on what gets done and how much you do yourself.

seems like this guy is charging 2400 then for R&R of the engine and head work.... thats WAY to much.

so far my price list is bottom and top end and some extra crap from the dealer in parts only about $2500-2600 plus machine work and labor if so and extra block, head etc if so....but you dont need a new crank ...

Like i said, 4400 is NOT much - it all depends on WHAT it includes. Hell i could run up a bill of 8k on engine parts alone heh

Just get your crank magnaflux'ed and if its good, keep it.

Again, CHECK in WRITING what they are charging you. Dont make the same mistake I made once....a 6700$ mistake!

it's 4400 included the kit from howell and lifters
and all the machine work we included the price for a new crank and a new head also but he wants to charge 1400 for labor and you're saying 700 that's half of it
but i told the guy no it's just too much money for me i might get the howell and then i'l try to put it myself
thanks for the replies

add $1,000, and thats how much i payed for my spyder. lol. i would shop around if i were you, just to be sure. it seems like a lot to me, but what do i know. i work on my own cars. lol. i would just say shop around, or find someone with the tools. it would be more fun that way anyway. :)
