30087, EGR catch can is this possible?
Posted by Fate, Aug-13-02 07:48 AM
I finally received my notice for emissions testing and have had my EGR blocked off for some time now (since porting and polishing the mani). I was curious to see if anyone had rigged a catch can for collecting the mess the EGR sends back to the intake or would there just bee too much unburned fuel to collect. If anyone has, could you be kind enough share the details as to how you arranged this. If not please let me know why you don't think this would work. I figure if the unburned fuel is being dumped to a can then the sniffer shouldn't be able to tell the system has been bypassed and my intake stays clean in the process.

the egr's purpose is to recirculate exhaust air, not unburnt fuel. although crud does go back into the intake (part of the reason for the egr block off) but it would be MUCH too hot to hook up a catch can to the egr. like i said, it's mostly air coming out of it. it would probably melt the can not to mention the tube to the can. i have heard of people poking a small hole in the block off plate to trick the egr system into thinking it's working correctly. mite want to try that.

I'm not really cocerned with the cel and fooling it just didn't want all that crud being rerouted though the exhaust for the emissions sniffer. Thanks for the input it probably would melt just about anything I could use plus I would have to find a way to seperate the air and the crud. Maybe I'll just hook the system back up for the test then yank it back off.

Unless you live in CA don't worry about it. The EGR helps NOx emission at the expense of raising COx emissions, and sincee CA is the only state that tests NOx emissions, you will be just fine with emissions in any other state.

I'm actually in Maryland and I think I'll just run it though the way it is and see if passes if not then I'll worry about it
