30042, Question for someone who has done the "Final Drive Mod" on an Eclipse/Talon
Posted by Corbin, Aug-13-02 03:25 AM
I know this has been talked about alot, BUT I need more confirmation. I am getting piles of bullshit from all of my local Mitu/Chrys dealers about fixing the speedo. Some say "you can't use the scan tool to reset tire size". Others say "we won't do it". Others tell me to change the actual pinion on the sensor. I don't think the sensor even has a pinion (I think its non-contact). Someone please assure me that the dealer really CAN set the tire size on an Eclipse/Talon! I really want to have an accurate speedo, but the dealers are useless.

I have searched the message board and all I see are "Dealer uses DRB-3 scan tool to set tire size". I didn't see a post from someone who has actually fixed their speedo. I've talked to all my local dealers and they feed me lies/ignorance. I need someone to assure me that this can actually be done at the dealer. If the dealer can't do it, I'll have to buy a converter box (www.dakotadigital.com). I just want to hear from someone who has actually had their speedo fixed.

Scan tool? Is it electronic? I have a scan-diagnostic tool that shows all kinds of things. Someone told me some of these things change things on command.

I never bothered with my speedo. I know it is off by about 5mph at cruising speed.

You can reset the speedo by pulling the pin off. Reset the speedo just like you have to do when installing white face guages. I folled my roomates car at 55 and then put the needle back on. Yeah it's a pain finding somebody to drive in front of you but that was the easiest way for me to do it.

Yeah, but then your RPM's aren't right. Are they?

what i am wondering is if this mod will affect the way our cars kick down into passing gear, if the rpm's are gonna be a little higher going a slower speed does it mean that you will have to go a little slower to get your car to really kick down. i hope someone understands me cause i dont know if im explaining it right

I've noticed my tranny shifts harder now. ( I also have the trans go shift kit in it.) Which is a good thing. Dodge made this tranny for old ladys that don't like the snap in between gears. The tranny slides gently in between gears that heats them up. Yor RPM's will not be off. They will run higher due to the bigger gearing. When I kick down to pass I really notice the difference. You get up and are gone in a big hurry. The gas milage goes down though. I always say if you have money to mod you have money for gas. Hell race gas is almost $5 a gallon. Add that with the cost of nitrous and tires.... Oh what the hell this mod is worth every penny. That's my 2 cents though!

My Transgo shift kit is in the mail...heh heh. I suppose that the dealer may not be able to set any tire size on a '95. They all deny the ability to do it, so I guess I'll buy the speedo calibrator from dakota digital (SGI-5). A dealer probably would have charged me out the ass anyway.

What's a transgo shift kit?

Transgo shift kits are available from:
http://www.transtarindustries.com/
Cost about $28
Part# SK 604/606
For Chrysler A604 automatic transmission

You install the included parts and modify some components in the transmission to change how it shifts.

I don't know how hard it is to install, but it is not "plug and play"
