My Water Pump is startting to FAIL (Leaking).

I had the Timing Belt and Water Pump changed at 62,000 miles. Now I'm at 92,000 miles and my Water Pump is leaking. I can here a "clunking" noise coming from it when I start up the car.

Man this sucks, How hard is it to change yourself. My problem is the location of the Water Pump - I think it's behind the Timing Belt/cover.

I can change it myself if I can get access to it. Firestone wants $350.00 for labor to change it.

I can get a new Water Pump at Pepboys for $60.00 for my 98 Eclipse Spyder.

Any Suggestion???

Wow, 30000 miles on a water pump is pretty shitty IMO. Are you POSITIVE its the water pump making the noise? Usually its a constant noise, not just when at startup. Is it leaking right at the pump itself? You do need to take off all the timing belt stuff to change the pump, but after the T-belt stuff is off, its rather easy to do. If you can do the T-belt, you can do the waterpump. Simple to do if you can do that..

Ok - Since I have to take off the Timing Belt to access the Water
Pump. I mind as well replace the Timing Belt even though it was
replace less then 30,000 miles ago.

My question is how long do you think I can drive like this before
replacing the Water Pump and Timing Belt.

As of now, there doesn't seem to be a leak yet coming from the Water
Pump. But you definitely can hear it go clunk-clunk (Sounds like
something is loose inside the Water Pump) as the egine idles.

I've been driving slow (60mhp) and watching my Water Temperature
Gauge and it's not over heating. I'm hoping I can drive like this
for a few more months to get more miles out of the Timing Belt to
justify the early replacement.

If the Water Pump goes and I need to tow my Spyder, my insurance will
cover it. If I can drive it for another 6-12 months then I'll wait,
otherwise I might as well do it this weekend or soon.

What do you guys/gals think.

I'd put it on the top priority list if I was you. Go ahead and replace the belt, they're not too much money... and you can never have too new of a belt on there :-) Keep an eye on the temperature gauge at all times, and check your water level religiously.

I'm changing the Water Pump, Timing Belt, Upper & Lower Radiator Hose, Thermostat, and all the other belts (A/C, Power Steering, Alternator) with weekend.

The Water Pump is starting to leak.
