29989, Need advice on installing aftermarket AT cooler!!!!
Posted by RoboTechDSM, Aug-12-02 03:58 AM
I got the Permacool AT cooler. I'm gonna change my tranny fluid really soon, so i might as well install this too. I just need some advice on how to install it. I take that there's 2 cooler lines from the AT. One going to the radiator, and one going to the tranny. My questions:

1. Where's the line you take out so you run the cooler inline??
2. Where do you guys usually mount the cooler??
3. Does anyone have pics on the install??
4. I know you put in 4 qts. or 1 gallon of AT fluid, how much will you need to put in after the install??
5. To all you guys who have it, how do you like it, does it improve shifting and all that stuff??

I know I got more questions but can't think of more right now, Thanks in advance for the help.

hey dude, i got my tranny cooler mounted with some lowes metal brackets on the side vent on the drivers side.. i have it mounted in such a way it will receive air. the line you got to remove to install the tranny lines are located on the drivers side at the radiator.. one end connects to the radiator and another goes in the engine bay to the tranny.. if you dont have a idea what im talking about look at your engine bay at the tranny, and follow the lines to where they go to and you will figure it out...also you might want to put a tranny temp gauge in so you know how hot its getting thats the one main point of it all.. if you need one i got one extra used for a couple days for $38 bucks plus s+h..hope this helps.. oh yah if my webpage loads you can see it in one of the pixs...

I don't mean to get off subject but, what are some normal tranny temps and what is the max temp before you need tostart taking it easy?

On average how much does the tranny cooler lower the temps compared to not having one?

Hey Michael, thanks man. I'm still a bit lost, but I'll jack up the car tommorow and look for it. I 'THINK' I know where it's at judging from what you told me.

If you do a full flush with filter change and cooler install you will need around 10 quart !
Advice: have someone in the car with the foot on the brake, put the car in reverse with one hose disconnected and flush as much as you can

and BTW I love my cooler

Well, the last time I changed my AT fluid, I just dropped the pan, empty it, and bolt it back up. Then I placed 4 qts of AT fluid. That's how my friend who worked at a Dodge dealership did it for me way back. He just used 1 gallon.

Also, I have a minor differential housing leak just behind the tranny pan. How hard is it to fix that?? Will I need new gaskets??? I know that the differential and tranny uses the same fluid, so I've been keeping an eye on my AT fluid. Thanks!!!!

dude, on your tranny cooler box it gives you some ideas how to find which line is your tranny fluid line... follow that if your still lost, that will break it down for you.. also temps i have seen with the tranny gauge on a normal day, no more then 100..and on hot days or pushing it on the freeway for a while it can go up to 110 for me that is.. i really never go pass 110 on my gauge..

Yeah, I think I found it. There's 2 lines just below where the intake piping goes down. They are side by side with each other. If you are facing the engine, which one do I take out, left (pass. side) or right (driver side)???

What tranny temp gauge are you using? The Autometer gauges that I saw only start at 100 degrees on the elec. ones, and like 140 degrees on the mech.
I know mine has to be more then 100-110 cause if I touch my shit I get burned.
Where is your sender mounted at?
And does anyone know the highest temp you can go before shit starts to mess up?
