29633, Staying Naturally Aspirated Posted by kampl, Aug-07-02 05:30 AM
Hi everybody, Is it possible to produce upwards of 180+ HP at the crank on a 420A without a poweradder (turbo, nitrous, etc.)? Has anyone out there done this? If so, what combination of parts and modifications have you used to accomplish this? I was thinking 4-2-1 header, cat-back 2.5" exhaust, bored throttle body, ported & polished intake, hotter cams, aftermarket ignition, possibly underdrive pulley........ Any help/info on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks all.

With cams, all exhaust and intake work done, and an underdrive pulley, I would see 180 crank hp as a very realistic goal. With high compression and some more goodies I'll be shooting for higher than that.

You have the option of using a 2.4L 420A to accomplish this also. I think going that route or the howell stroker motor would let you easily accomplish that goal!
Best of luck.

just like what ^^ said. High compression, higher displacement

i've heard some numbers that with 12.5/1 compression and some crane cams you can push 197 thats awsome puts you up there with gst/gsx's you could prolly take a gst just because you have no turbo lag that and A simple bolt on and you are pushin over 200 just a thought i kinda wanna do that

29638, RE: Staying Naturally Aspirated Posted by EvuLFleA, Aug-07-02 08:12 AM
12.5:1 will yield probably 160HP.
Generally 4% for every point up.

Ahh yes... and with the bolt-ons... I can't wait. :)

Remember that it you do choose to run a high compression that your daily driveability of the car will lessen as well as your mpg will also decrease. This is sadly the major drawback of having a high horsepower NA car.

It's worth noting that the 160hp number is completely void of other supporting mods. If you took a bone stock 420A and got the compression up to 12.5:1, it would make that type of power.
Now throw in an UDP, ported intake manifold, ported cylinder head, big cams and you're talking about some serious HP potential.
We'll see what happens. My setup is going to be identical to that with the exception of compression. I'm being a wuss right now and only going to 10.5:1. Dyno numbers will appear in a couple of weeks.

Question, why would high compression take away driveability and MPG? Seems like the higher compression would yield more power for the amount of air entering the engine and that with the right timing the engine wouldnt be rougher and such!

29644, RE: Staying Naturally Aspirated Posted by Avenger, Aug-07-02 04:46 PM
up the compression, get all the good supporting mods, some cams and some head work and manifold porting. Gotta get more air in there.

Thanks everybody for your responses. I plan on getting it breathing better naturally, and then replacing the bottom end with forged pieces for running a 100-150 HP nitrous shot through it for that little extra fun maybe. Or maybe I'll just build the crap out of it and stay NA. Who knows? Thanks again everybody.

if your concern is MPG, raising compression will give you more MPG because the car is making more power at lower rpms and there for has to go thorugh less load to move the car. your average honda runs over 10.5 - 1.

29647, RE: Staying Naturally Aspirated Posted by XT DSM, Aug-08-02 06:52 PM
well I decided to stay NA and got all of the above (ported/polished/milled head, ported and polished intake manifold and TB, CAI, headers, test pipe, cat back, drag crane cams #16, valve springs, stronger lifters and rockers, AFX UDP and AEM cam geas) the bottom end is still stock tho.
I am happier with the car now, but for the amount of money and power gains, I wish I have gone turbo.
talking about turbo lag, well u will also get the same effect with a high lift cams, yes it killed my low end a bit.

I've slowly come to the conclusion that bolt on's at the beginning are a bad idea! You can also do what Im just now thinking Im gonna do. Buy a used head, clean it up do all the porting, 3-angle valve job ,larger SS valves and a howell top end kit with drag cams in preparation for the 2.4L swap. Buy a 2.4L bare block, remove balance shafts, clean it up, get 12.5 compression bottom end kit, balanced and nife edged crank, UDP and custom lightweight pulleys(unless theres a kit out there I dont know about). That will put me in a good spot, although while buying and building all this Im gonna have the same Hp car for a long time, but it should be worth it!! Then its custom Variable length intake with possible custom quad TB's or buy quad tb kit, header, high flow cat and cat back(or custom Variable diameter catback), increased rev limit to 9k rpms. Then tranny work, nice clutch, fidanza flywheel, custom ratios built with stronger materials, and better custom synchros.

ahhh costs too much money to do all that stuff just get a turbo kit bwahahaha

Bolt-ons are not a bad idea. They are a very good starting place, and will set up future mods. If you go in and port your head without exhaust or intake to breath you won't be able to pull in enough air to make it worth your while.

Yeah I know. I think its more worth it to buy the big stuff first so you dont go, ohh NA is crap for the money spent. When you do buy that intake and exhaust you will feel a bigger improvement then if you bought it first, so the money will feel more worth it. Also like I said I do plan on getting quad-tb's so no use in buying an intake or bored TB and the like. Just me plan, do whatever you feel will make you happy!

29652, RE: Staying Naturally Aspirated Posted by kampl, Aug-12-02 10:33 AM
That's what it comes down to I guess. Do what "does it for ya". Once the full intake and exhaust is done I plan on replacing the bottom end with forged pieces and running a good amount of nitrous (125 shot or so). Too bad I won't be ready for Import Wars in NH by then. Maybe October for the fall races. Anything is possible. Soo much for NA huh? ;)

On a side note, what's the deal with the 3.0L blocks? I don't see them on howell. Are they actually going to be made, and if so how long til they ship? Will this be a direct drop in in place of our 2.0L?
