29449, Check Engine Light (Part 2) Posted by JohnnyCorona, Aug-04-02 03:53 PM

the car basically feels likes its misfiring and occasionally wants to die, but doesnt. if i accelerate hard it gets worse. the check engine light keeps coming on today, if i unplug the battery its ok for a while, but then the light comes back on.
I tried the on-off-on-off-on (to check the code) and instead of blinking the check engine light finally turned off. But my car is running like shit!! i saw in another post about turning the gas cap.. i lost my gas cap 3 days ago. could that cause that? its been fine til today. i should also tell you that yestarday i had a new muffler put on and increase the pipe to 2 1/2 inches (kept the cat). but it was fine all day yestarday. i also washed my engine yestarday, but again it was fine all day yestarday, i even raced it last night and no problems til today.
any ideas?

Your code still may be stored. I'd still try and dot the key dance and see if anything shows up.
A tripping engine may lend itself to a lot of sensor issues, especially in leiu of the recently washed engine bay. (I hate it when people do that; I just use a spray cleaner and wipe) However, a new set of spark plugs can always go a long way in helping a car's firing problems, and many times with our cars, that is the only issue. Plus, it only take about 5 minutes to change them.

u get the CEL from the gas cap not bein there... the fuel system chex for pressure or sumthin obd2 style, and if your cap aint there, u got less pressure, and a CEL will lite up...
maybe??
cud be a fould O2 sensor, but i wud go the cheap route and get new plugz... since your 4g63, maybe consult the 4g section
good luck

well first of all fix your gas cap. I dont know for sure on our cars but on most cars if you dont have the cap, they wont run very good. Also have you checked for vacuum leaks? Does it idle spuratticaly at all(up, down, up, down, etc)?

Please! Please! Please! I agree with jason be very careful washing your engine, I really think that the washing was the main problem rather than the fuel cap issue, you could really cause some damage if u get water into the sensors and other electronic parts, if u dont use plastic-water can also cause your plug wires problems especially if they are cracked and worn and are in need of replacing. just wanted to thank everybody for trying to help out.
i finally got around to taking out the spark plugs, they looked bad! i hate when things like that happen at the same time you do someting else to the car, Like wash the engine!!! throws off your whole thought process. anyway, i shoulda checked that first.
but thanks again guys!
also, for those with a 46g3, did you guys throw out that plastic plug cover?? it seems like i go throw plugs and wires way to often!
