shortly after i bought my car i noticed a slight buzzing in my transmission when i slowed down.. the dealer siad they could tear down the transmission for 900 bucks to find out what it was, and of course i said hell no...

It has gotten a lot worse... its a prominent buzzz .. zz. zz. zz zz When i take my foot off the gas and slow down IN GEAR...

1st off... what the hell could it be?
2nd... could i cause severe problems (i know it probably could)
3rd... how can i find out what it is without paying Satan $900?

900 to tear down a tranny? Is he crazy? Maby's its a bad throw out bearing, which also wouldnt require you to do anymore than drop it, replace it, and reinstall, no biggy, dont have to get in the case for that... if the to bearing looks ok still and spins fine, then you might have a problem.

of course he's crazy... so should i take it to a transmission specialist around here maybe? what do you recommend?

I would also check your fluid(or see if you can put more in it). I myself would change it out with BG synchroshift and see what happens.

Is your car stick or auto?

Auto's always make that stupid Chrystler buzzing when rolling to a stop. Listen to a Caravan sometime.

Are you on crank? If you do not use the specified mopar blend, your tranny will sieze up sometime or another, don't chance it. Mine blew with 30K miles on it, previous owner switched fluid and I didnt know... bummer...

As for the origional poster, pay a tranny shop to drop the tranny out if you really dont have spare time... cause its not that hard to pull it out.. You shouldnt pay more than 250 to have it dropped out if you have to pay. I'd guess it was the TO bearing, since our transmissions are supposed to last longer than the engines themself.

BTW, TO bearing is like 30 bucks... if you do the labor yourself... thats a cheap fix, huh?

i'm on a 5 spd. I'm not sure on the fluid, i'll check that today.

I've also got all the time in the world Super20G... but i dont know the first thing about how to check a TO nut for wear, not to mention how to get to my tranny. Do you think u could post or email me on how, or who i could talk to? If i could fix my tranny for 30 bucks i'd be a happy man, being that i'm an unemployed student at berkeley... thanx a ton!

Mine has been doing that exact same thing. I'm on my 3rd tranny btw.

If you have the time, do it yourself. Download the factory service manual for help, but its really not needed. Goto www.armond30.com and go in the tech tips, armond gives a good walk through for how to remove the tranny... Just remove the tranny, pull the clutch out of the bellhouing, and replace the throw out bearing with a new one from a mopar dealer, or even napa or autozone.. the bearing is on the input shaft, held by a fork, it slides right out... its just a lot of labor involved. I would replace the clutch as well while your at it. If that isnt the prob and its internal, then you just saved the labor to have it pulled.. just take it to a shop and have them tear it down and tell you whats wrong, tell them you dont have the $$ to have it fixed, you just want them to charge you for the tear down and tell you what it needs... then you can get parts from a core only tranny locally for cheap, take them the parts tranny and have them reassemble it.

"are you on crank"? Dude, keep your stupid comments to yourself. Maybe something like "I recommend using only the factory fluid because I have had bad luck with transmissions".

I have been running BG Synchroshift over 60K miles without any problems. Most locals with turbo or nonturbo DSM cars are using BG and nobody has had any problems with it. Some of these nonturbo cars have over 150K miles on the original manual tranny.

If you want to use factory fluid only, that is just fine. People have transmission problems while using that fluid as well. I am sure it is not related to fluid, but something else.

My point was that it might be low on fluid and making noise. Some people do not check the simple stuff first.

I noticed a noise like that last night driving home. It was like if I was accelerating less than WOT I could feel this slight vibration through the pedal. It sounded like a buzzing, or like a tire that's rubbing that plastic wheel well shit.

I would have to make the same recommendation on the fluid. You may get lucky and have no issues but your always going to be fine on factory fluid. The factory fluid is a very good quality fluid. Besides do you really think there is a real difference performance wise?

Performance no. Heat resistance/longevity, maybe? Even after 30K miles the fluid looks great. The factory stuff that came out of my car did not look nearly as good.

BG is the only stuff that I would even dare to use besides the factory stuff. My tranny shifts great and makes no noise what so ever.

I autocross and drag race my car constantly. So far so good.

BTW: there are mitsu dealers that sell bg at the parts counters and have recommended it for both the mitsu fwd and chrysler fwd tranny. I did not want to post this, because they did not personally tell me this. They have told friends of mine and they do sell it.

Do what you will.

Yep, call a mitsu dealer, they give you BG, call a dodge dealership, they give you mopar fluid... I am sure the BG will do ok, but in the long run, i'd rather be safe than sorry... I contacted my previous owner and he used BG, and my tranny is fried... but then again, i didnt have any probs till i threw in the cm stg 4 clutch and the quaife lsd, 700 miles later... boom.... I think the added stress finished it off... i guess..

one thing i think you peeps are overlooking is how the previous owner drove my car, as i do not know... she could've been an old granny riding the clutch and stalling it out every 2 seconds... who knows. sooo,

Just called AAMCO... talked to the nicest service manager ever... he said he'd diagnose the problem for free if he could, and if it only needed a service it would only be 40 bucks... SATAN wanted to charge me 900 bucks to DIAGNOSE THE FUKIN PROBLEM... it's so fukin rare to find GOOD service in the car dept... i'm glad i found this guy. He's literally down the road from me also, so its perfect. Thanx for the suggestions guys.

well aamco charges 485 to take it out and repair it, unless it needs a total rebuild, which will be 1100... fuk eclipse transmissions lol

Well, just do it yourself. I am telling you its not hard to drop it. If its not the TO bearing, take it somewhere and have them disassemble it on a bench, most likely that noise is a bearing somewhere, maby a gear roller bearing like what was the case with me and others on this board. If they say its shot, just buy a junkyard tranny, I got one for 100 bucks with a cracked bellhousing... take it to them, have them disassemble it and check all the OEM tolerances, and then throw it back in the car yourself.

I am getting a whining noise. Its really not noticable but I can hear it if i have thwe window open and I am hanging out the window. I plan on checking everything out when i get a clutch.
