29203, why I didn't get a 5 speed Posted by RIeclipse, Aug-01-02 04:19 PM
I wanted a 5 speed but my friend blew his tranny at 46,000 miles in his gs 1998 eclipse and said I should just buy a automatic because I'm gonna end up getting a new tranny every 50,000, so that's why I got a automatic but now I want a 5 speed swap and would I need a 1995 5 speed ecu from a eclipse and is there anything out there will will help not blewing up tranny's and this guy said he blew 3 tranny's under 60,000 http://www.cardomain.com/member_pages/view_page.pl?page_id=210731&page=3, so is that a problem for eclipse with the blewing up tranny's and cluth?

OMG a 5speed guy is praising the auto trannies? Sounds a little backwards from the usual song about our auto trannies.

i don't know about everyone else but my '97 gs 120000 miles is still running on stock tranny and clucth and i don't drive slow maybe it was just your friend's car on the swap some people here will help you for sure but when i thought of it in my impreza wasn't really easy or cheap

There is no tranny computer on a 5 spd - so I am pretty sure you just ditch your auto tranny computer...otherwise someone correct me if I am wrong but the computers should be the same AT to MT.
As far as destroying trannies...tell your friend to push the clutch down before he moves the stick :-P haha - I don't know - bad luck I guess.

He either has a GETRAG tranny (lol), doesn't know how to drive stick, or likes to do huge smokey one wheel burnouts that spit his diff pin out the side.

^ ditto.
There are no problems with our tranny that aren't driver error or abuse. The differential pin can use to be welded on higher HP cars, But there is no design flaw that will cause your trans to blow every 50k.

We do tend to have problems with our synchros. With the quote that I got to tear my tranny apart, I'd be better off getting a new one.
|
29210, RE: One less computer Posted by DarkOne, Aug-02-02 06:10 AM
No, we really don't. I have an input shaft on my table at home, and our syncro ruing assemblys are BIG. If you drive it right, you'll never have a problem (push the clutch in!)

29211, RE: One less computer Posted by Doug96GS, Aug-02-02 11:51 AM
Tell your friend that you have to push that left pedal down when you shift the gears :-)
|
29212, RE: One less computer Posted by Avenger, Aug-02-02 11:59 AM
That is incorrect. You need a MT ECU. Otherwise your revlimit will be 6.5k plus there are very many differences between the 2 ecus

29213, RE: One less computer Posted by RIeclipse, Aug-02-02 02:51 PM
synchros, what is that and how does this happen, how to fix, and does this happen to alot of 2g eclipse's?
|
29214, RE: One less computer Posted by HadesOmega, Aug-02-02 07:26 PM
syncros help keep your gear aligned so you don't grind them, notice sometimes when you shift and you don't shift properly it'll just pop out or if you push the stick without the clutch it doesn't grind? Haha also here's something cool because we have syncros you can powershift, if you rev it to oh 3k rpm you can shift into gear without using clutch :P Doesn't look like it's good for your tranny but if you clutch ever goes out it's handy to know.
Man how could he say get an auto!!!! why!!!! I have a auto MR2 OMG that car is soooo not fun to drive, I want to shift not the stupid car.... Life would be better if there was no such thing as an automatic!!!

29215, RE: One less computer Posted by RIeclipse, Aug-03-02 08:46 AM
ok when I do get the 5 speed then is there anything I could get aftermarket that will help me save my tranny and the clutch like do they sell a stronger syncros or is there anything that I could get you can't shift if the clutch is not pushed in, I mean is there anything that I could buy to like a block won't shift till I press the clutch in. I hope you understand what I'm talking about. lol
and why do people get flywheels for there tranny and I see people having stage 2 and stage 3 clutch. is that better?

So... you want to be the 2nd New Englander to do a tranny swap? Let me know if you need a hand! -=B-=

29217, RE: One less computer Posted by HadesOmega, Aug-03-02 12:15 PM
nah just take care of your tranny. Our trannies can take a beating I'll tell you that. Just change the fluid every 60k BG syncroshift is some nice stuff too, worx good cold or hot :) haha if you have a loose shifter like my stupid ass check it out, I crushed the pin holding the linkage to the tranny wasn't cool getting towed home. Double clutching and heel to toe will also help preserve your tranny cuz you not jerking it around, also stiffer motor mount will keep your engine from flopping around which will mess your tranny up too.

as soon as I get back on track paying off my bills and my bill for college so that I could start going to school and fix my car, which I should not be, but o well, 3 months ago a kid hit me at a red light and didn't have any insurance, and I couldn't pay for full so I only paid for laib. I reason I didn't have full was because I didn't have a job and my insurance is high because of my crashes and my speeding tickets. but as soon as I get the money to fix my car I will be going to hooters on sunday in warwick to hang out with you guys. ask around if anyone want's to buy rims, they are 5 lug, hypersilver, adr, toyo tires, rims used for 2 months and now I need to sale them because I need the money to fix my car and i'm asking 1350 and I paid 1900 for them, that money would be like 20% the money I need to fix my car, and I will still be saving the other 80%.
RIMS FOR SALE SHOULD FIT ANY 5 LUG CAR 5X100 & 5X114.3 HYPERSILVER ADR TOYO TIRES USED ONLY FOR 2 MONTHS ASKING $1350 PAID $1900 ALL THE GUYS IN NE ASK AROUND IF ANYONE IS LOOKING FOR RIMS
THANKS NICK

Are you a member of the New England list? If you are not, then you should join. Use 2GNT for the technical stuff (the turbo guys don't understand us or our motors), but the New England list for gatherings, asking for help, meeting other DSMers, etc... Actually, there are 2 groups... http://groups.yahoo.com/group/NewEngDSM/ This is the more technical list that stays on topic more often then not. Please note the requirements to join. Make sure that your yahoo profile included the required information.
And the other: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/NEDSMChat This is a bit more casual, talking more about boobs, beer, and wings (hooters meets, etc...). Look forward to seeing you around, and let me know if there is anything I can do to help get your ride on the road again... -=B-=

29224, RE: One less computer Posted by The1Bill, Aug-04-02 04:44 PM
There is a radiator at a yard, well, at least there was recently. It is sitting in the 2G Talon nonturbo that I got a lot of my interior partrs for my tranny swap from. The place is called Goldie's, and is on rt. 1A in Walpole MA. Their phone ## is (508) 668-7450 Hope I could help! Let me know if you do wind up coming up for that, maybe we can catch a cup of coffee or something. I live in the next town over! :-D -=B-=

could you till me what year that talon was and the mileage, If I can't find a newer eclipse, then I'm just gonna buy a new one, do you see where i'm coming from, and i don't want to buy a old, because it was used for a long time and could start leaking.
