28774, Code 43
Posted by mem659, Jul-29-02 02:58 AM
Okay guys / gals I am new to the talon sean. My brtoher has a 96 ESI with 75,000 miles on it. He has had a bad mis problem for about two weeks. Luckly I found your guys site with the code info on it. Any who we pulled the codes this weekend, and got 43. Where would you start frist on this? He as already replaced the upstream o2 sensor, and code 43 lists quite a few things. Can you give me a starting point. Maybe a list from most common to least common problems that will give code 43. Thanks for all your help, and I can't wait to get his talon running right. Then I can start asking about hopup questions.

Thanks:-)

43 Ignition coil #1 / #2 primary circuit Harness and connector / Ignition coil #1/#2
43 Multiple cylinder misfire (M/T) Ignition coil / Spark plugs / Ignition circuit / Injector / Upstream HO2S / Compression pressure / Timing belt / Crankshaft position sensor / Air intake / Fuel pressure / Crankshaft position sensor circuit and connector

Try these in this order

I would check coil, this can be done with a multimeter set to measure resistance (see Chiltons manual for how to do this and correct readings)

Try changing spark plugs, one could be fouled/broken etc..

try changing plug wires (or check resistance like with coil)

If the above doesnt help, then begin to check other sensors listed above using Chiltons to find correct readings.

This should help you get to the bottom of it,
The chiltons is a good tool to have and I would recommend that before anyother modification. It will tell you manufacturers specs for resistance readings and how to check each sensor for proper function

Hope that helps

We have not had a chance to get the chilton's manual yet. Beleave me that is the frist thing on the shopping list. So could you help me out with the coil test and values?

Thanks for the help:-)

Ever have a problem of not starting?

I got a code 43 and it turned out to be a intermittently bad ASD relay.

10 dollars later, car starts and runs perfect!

Try and find a shop in town that will hook it up to a scan tool for free. The scan tool is MUCH more descriptive and it breaks the code down better.

Easy way to find out what it is, which it will most likely be cuz its happened four times to me. Pull off your ignition wires, and take a close look at each of the coils. Most should be somewhat shiny, not too much but somewhat, perhaps one will be corroded to all hell looking burnt up, thats what happened to me several times, and the warranty place just keeps fixing what is happening instead of what is causing it, has anyone else had the same problem... just check that that could be it.

Primary Coil resistance .45-.65 ohms
the primary coil is the connector on the site, unclip the harness and measure resistance on the coil pack side between the middle and each of the other pins the left pin is cyl. 2&3 and the right pin is cyl 1&4

Secondary resistance which you remove the plug wires and test each coil for resistance between 1&4 and 2&3 resistance should be 11,000 to 14,000 ohms

coil positions
rear of engine
1---4
2---3
front of engine

Thanks to everone for the help, I will be checking the coil tonight. I looked on the acronyms page, but could not find anything on the ASD relay. What is it and what dose it do? Something my brother told me last night is he re ran the codes on a cold motor, and still only got 43. Then he started rooting around under the hood, and found the electrical thing that is attached to the EGR valve was warm to the touch. I don't know what it is, or what it dose. Could that be a cause for code 43? I just want to say thanks one more time, and you guys have a great site. Also sorry for any spelling erros.

ASD relay is the Auto Shut Down relay. All is has to do is click over for a split second and the car will start. Are you having problems starting the car?

No, but someone said something about it in an earlyer post. Also dose anybody know what that EGR thing is? It is in front of the motor and has the pentagon on it. Thanks

EGR is exhaust gas recirculation, it basically takes unburned fuel vapors etc. and re-routes it back into the intake to be burned up again, it basically helps in gas milage a little bit and keeps the environment a little cleaner :) but it also gums up the intake and after a while will cause a performance decrease. there is alot of info on it just do a search, its probable in the "things we/ve seen before" section, alot of people just block it off and live with the CEL it will throw

I know what the EGR is, but what about the electronic thing that is attached to it? It has the pentagon symble on it. Could this be the cause of the code 43? My brother siad it got hot when he ran codes on the cold motor. Thank you for the explation of the EGR.
