28617, car starts, then stops (whats wrong?)
Posted by Weezle745, Jul-26-02 09:22 AM
Today when leaving the DMV, I get in my car and my car doesnt start. The engine will not turn over, just like when your battery dies. So I had AAA come out and give me a jump start. Well it worked and my car got started . BUT then I took out the keys and it wouldnt start again. Luckily he was still there.

So he jumpstarted me again and this time I let the engine rev at about 2.5k rpms for about 1.5 min. And my car was fine but I never did turn off the engine. So I was driving home and wanted to stop to get a drink of soda but had a bad feeling that my car wouldnt start again if I did. So I just went home. And sure enough, when I got home, the car is dead and wont start.

What is the problem, can somebody please help me? Thanks

get your battary checked out... what kind do u got? how old is it? check the voltage etc.. also check your starter, alternator if you must..

This is a good webpage.

Download handout 1, its a "written diagnostic procedure for diagnosing a car non-starting problem". :)

ok, i just took the battery to get tested at Kragen and results should be ready in about 1/2 hour. I think its the battery because wouldnt the car not run if the alternator or starter was bad? This guess is based on things ive heard.

this happen to my moms toyota corlla '94 .. the car would not start, so i jump it. started up then turn it off it would not.. check the battary it was cool, jump it again same thing.. the last time i jumped it it started but when i was right in front of toyota (dealer) the car turned off at a light... anything can happen.. it should just be a battary problem...

This is normal when your battery dies. When you get a "jump start" from another vehicle, it charges your battery for short time. This charge will enable you to start your car; however, when you turn off your car again, your car may not start due to the voltage of your battery...meaning the charge from the "jump start" was not much. Jump starting a car is typically only good for one engine start when the battery is already dead.

The technique of revving the engine at a constant low rpm is a good way to increase your battery voltage for a while.

"ok, i just took the battery to get tested at Kragen and results should be ready in about 1/2 hour."

About a 1/2 hour why so long? It only takes 30 seconds to check a bettery. It's your battery man, it has a dead cell in it. Once a battery has a dead cell you can jump it and let it charge all you want but it wont hold a charge. The car runs fine after the jump start? You CCA (cold cranking amps) are probably low that is why you can't start the car. You hardly use any power when the car is running, most of the power is used up starting the car. Replace the battery and problem solved.

Ya what they said, it's the battery. Happened twice to my car already with OEM batteries. Car will be jumped, but if i turn it off and try to start it, it won't. I'm now on my fourth battery, but this one should last.

thanks guys, you were right. It was my battery. And I dont know why it takes 45min to test the battery. they hooked it up to a machine and told me to come back. Installed the new battery and now the car runs fine again. Thanks again.

Hey, how much for a battery? Which brand should I go with? I'm getting weary already about my battery life. Not sure if the previous owner changed it or not, plus everytime I start, it takes a while to turn over. Thanks.

I hear Die hard are the best. Tow trucks usually use Die Hard too. But they are more expensive. Get one with a good replacement warranty. I have a Exide Nascar battery with 2 year free replacement. The entire warranty is usually 60 to 84 months, but they pro-rate it so you only get a partial credit for the next battery. So make sure you get one with a good free replacement warranty (at least 2 years). I paid around 70 bucks for mine from Kragen auto.

hey mikey, sounds like it is your battery. For about 2months before my battery died, my car used to hesitate when I would start it. Now with the new battery it doesnt. If I was you, I would buy a battery as soon as possible because it sucks when you have to wait over an hour in 100 degree weather (without shade or water) for a tow truck to come give you a jump start.

I probably have a similar battery as marcus because its an Exide from Kragen with an 84month warranty. But i dont think its a NASCAR battery (whats the difference?) and mine was $60.
