28488, gst or aftermarket cat back exhaust Posted by trdberd, Jul-24-02 01:27 PM
right now i have a muffler on that came when i got it. the only word to describe it is LOUD. its great around town cause its really deep and doesnt buzz(well it does but only right after you start up till the exhaust warms up) turns alot of heads. but on long rides it gives me badass headaches. im putting on an aem cold air this weekend and i love the sound of those at full throttle and do not want my exhaust to overpower it. so i guess my ? is what would you recomend for exhaust that has a decent sound(no buzzing, god i cant stand that when one of those honda bumble bees go by) that is loud enough to notice but doesnt overpower your intake sound or give you freakin headaches Thanks guys Brad 98rs, 5speed

It sounds like the vast majority of exhaust systems for our cars are pretty loud. Peeps say that even cruising at 80mph w/ a gst muffler will give you a headache.
so what i say is to put some soundproofing in the back of your car before you get an aftermarket system. there is practically no sound proofing in the back of our cars (so use some closed cell foam underneath a loaded vinyl barrier for good soundproofing) if you have the cash, get a catback system. you're new here so I don't know what you're plans are but if you plan on going turbo, the turbo itself will quiet the exhaust.
most people here also vouch for custom-built exhaust setups. it seems to be a cheap way to go.

yes, gst muffler can be very annoying on the interstate. it gets quiet at about 3500rpms
but its a lot more quiet than my old dynomax muffler

personally i loved the gst muff when i had it, but after a while it just wasn't enough, especially when i heard some eclipses with custom exhausts.
i love mine and will not give it up for anything (at least untill i go turbo the i will get a 3 1/2 in exhaust) but till then i plan on keeping my gutted cat cherry bomb glass pack and banzi muffler

from the eclipses ive heard... the most quiet your exhaust is going to be (aside from stock) would be the gst muffler... i have one, i like the sound.. not too much, but a little deeper... but i had the greddy sp and that shit was pretty loud... i really dont think you are going to find anything more quiet than the gst muffler.
>i love mine and will not give it up for anything (at least >untill i go turbo the i will get a 3 1/2 in exhaust)
was that 3.5 typo??

yeah i second that. i luv my magnaflow right not but damn its loud after 30min+ of straight driving. gst muffler is definitely that way to go but would you guys recomment a gst muffler on stock gs piping or should i go custom with 2.5 in piping. do you all think i'll be loud?

well i got a gst with 2.5 down pipe & no cat to a hks superdragger, at first it was annoying, but i learn to deal with it, the headaches, suck, the only thing that will help it out is a shit load of dyno mat, and turn the music volume up, other than that its gonna annot you, and nobody inhere can cry about headaches, ride in the back of saberkhans eclipse with his no interior ass, while do 120mph, talk about load & hot & scary, there was nothin to hang on to when he passsed a semi, on the emergency lane, well dynomats your only pray later

I am turbo, but I just got an APEXi world sport catback. It is not real loud. You can definitely notice that you have a nice exhaust, but my ears don't bleed. Go to horsepowerfreaks.com. I paid $352.44 before shipping costs. That is a pretty damn good price if you ask me. This stuff is top notch, too. I am really pleased. Justin

Mine is fairly loud, but really only when you want it to be. Right at 3200 RPMS is where mine is loudest, which happens to be around 70 mph in fifth gear. I drove from Denver to Atlanta and it got annoying. You get used to it. The city isn't too bad, its loud when you want it to be. I can set off alarms in the wal-mart parking lot :)
