Every time that I "get on" my car, the ac/power steering belt starts to shred. Even the alternator belt ripped off one night. How can I make it stop shredding the belts?

Mine would do that every once in a while because the belt wasn't tight enough due to the UDP.. but for you I think one of your pulleys isn't on all of the way. Since both of your belts shread, then it is probably your crank pulley, or the one that the UDP replaces. When you have your belt off, look down in there and check to see if it is aligned.

OK, I was starting to think that it was the crank pulley. When I finish this belt off tonight, I'll check to see if it's aligned.

I had the same problem, I had to change my belts 3 times in 1 month last summer, try the mopar belts or the bando they wont expand as much as jobber belts.

Welcome to the UDP club. I had such a problem throwing belts that the last time it did it (while I was spanking a teg) I took it to Satan the next day and had them put the stock pulley back on. To me, being turbo, the HP gain was not worth the headache of having to keep reinstalling the belts.

Just and FYI thing, there is a TSB out there about the PS/AC belt problem. Apparently the PS pump and tensioner on some cars are not correct for the car and over time will start to shred belts like clockwork. Mine was doing it bad before the UDP and that didn't help much when I got it on, think the smaller size throws the alignment off a lil worse somehow. Anywho, check with satan and they can give you the right part numbers. I think the price on the PS pump bracket is like 70 something and the idler pulley is around 120. I have the PS bracket ordered and since I by-passed the AC you can see how bad it is off, the belt is riding a 1/4 off the edge of the pulley up top but it hasn't popped it yet.

My car shreds no belts with AFX UDP. There was a recall on the other pulleys though on some years. The only time I've shredded belts is when I had something on wrong. So I would say something is not right the pulley is on wrong or you need the recall done. I use the gatorback belts from goodyear nice and quiet.

I threw the first belt that came with the UDP, but then I bought a Kelly Springfield belt and it hasn't thrown it yet. It does squeal when I turn real sharp and its cold, but I just check it every once in a while and keep an eye on it. I don't think the pulley recall was for the 99s because i check every so often for open recalls and there are none.

hey sonic do you have an underdrive pulley AFX if so check that the pulley is in all the way , take out the bolt and make sure that there isnt a gap between the pulley and the cranck or check that the pulley i well aligned with the ac pulley

fastergs....I have a 99 and bitched...hollared...screamed...pleaded..and begged, and they did the pulley TSB for free, it did need it tho, I shredded several

I don't have the AFX UDP. I still have the factory pulley. It only started doing this after I got my alternator replaced and turned the boost up. The shop must have messed something up. That's all that I can figure.

Well I wish I would have read this post earlier because today I was driving home and my battery light came on. I made it home and opened up the hood and saw that the AC belt was starting to go and the Alternator belt had already gone.

I just put on the AFX UDP about a week ago. These were the belts that came with the UDP.

NE1 know the part numbers to get them from Autozone? I am not sure what they carry. In case you missed it I do have AC.

Also I may have just not tightened them enough. How do you know when they are tight enough?

The alternator belt kept getting thrown on my car. Sometimes it'd take the PS/AC belt out with it. This started happening after the dealership replaced the timing belt. I finally fixed the problem by getting the tensions right and using a liberal amount of belt dressing.

crank pulley needs to be torqued to 105ft.lbs. throw her in 5th, and have sumone step on the brakes when u start spinnin the pulley ;-)

Actually I was just looking at your site and Autozone doesn't carry any of the brands of belts that you list. What is the best belt out of the list and do you know who carries it as far as Oreilleys, Advanced Auto Parts, Car Quest, Napa....etc?

As far as tightening I meant the belt tension. I have my UDP torged to 105 already. It even looks like its aligned well.

There was never a recall on the belt issue, just a TSB, some years prior to 96 I believe can be fixed by just putting shims in behind the PS bracket, all others need a new bracket and/or idler pulley. I forget the TSB # off the top of my head but it's out there and it just sucks that you have to fight with Satan to get them to fix something that they know is a problem.......

i think the p/s a/c belt is a 50inch, 5 ribbed belt... the alt belt is 4 ribbed, and i think its 40 or 36 inches... best to take yours off, or use a string to measure... they should be able to tell the exact size from those belt/part numbers...

Yeah that would be nice to be able to measure it. The problem for me is that the alternator belt is in pieces. Maybe they can cross reference one of the belts on your site I will give that a try.

i had the new bracket put on mine, haven't shred the belt since..

The shop just told me that the bearing in my idler pulley was bad.

The TSB number is TSB97-37A001. I'm just going to have them replace the bearing for now so I can race Saturday at import nationals. Then I'll go to Satan and talk to them about that TSB.

Autozone now carry's the goodyear belts. At least mine does. I would get those so much quiter and much tougher.

Turns out that my UDP wasn't all the way on which made my pulleys out of alignment. Heated the thing up bigtime last night and got it on there quite a bit better. Looks like my pulleys are aligned alot better.

Ended up having to go to O'Reileys for the belts. They carried the Gates belts wich were a bit more expensive but at least they were in stock plus they offer a lifetime warranty on the belts.
