28084, Car doesn't get into gear.... Posted by HadesOmega, Jul-21-02 03:12 PM
Ok I've had this problem for a while but now it has escalated into a situation where my car will not work anymore. For a while now my shifter has always had a lot of play, don't remember when it started happenin but the stick would have a lot of play vertically as in shifting from 1 to 2 or 2 to 3, well you get the picture. Well I was driving to my unit (after I upped the boost to 8psi :) ) and I downshift into 3rd and then bam no third gear. So I try to put it into fourth and I got it. Then I was coming to a stop light and tried to downshift and bam no more gears the shifter just slides up and down now and doesn't grab anymore gears. I had to call a tow truck at the end of the day it really sucked. Anyway does ne1 know how to fix this? I don't think it's a problem with the tranny itself I think it has to do with the shifter rods and stuff. If ne knows anything lemme know how to fix it ^_^

sounds linkage related. Input shafts make noises when they break, broken, shot the shit--you get my picture. I'd check all the easy things first, like sheared cotter pins in the linkage. Just to verify the Trans problem, open your hood and reach down and manually switch gears (with the car off) on the transaxle. If you can do that, then it's most likely that it's linkage problem.

So, what was that fluid you've been using in your tranny? whoops! ;-) I had a bad feeling... Upped the boost, got more power, bam. I'd almost bet money the tranny is shot. :-(

Might be your clutch...mine could not shift at hi RPMs but would go at low RPMs when my clutch was burnt

Just check your shifter cables. it's not your tranny.

Yeah, i'd be willing to bet the cotter pin that holds the shifter lingage to the shifter came off, and so did the cables. I have seen many people on here who that has happened to..I'd check that first..

I would have figured he already checked the obvious, like shifter linkage... I still say the BG tranny fluid is not a good idea at all.... Our tranny is very sensitive to different oils... I dont know what the previous owner put in my when he did a clutch install right before I bought the car, but it completely ruined the tranny in 1.5 years, ~8000 miles.

uh oh haha you think its the syncroshift? I heard people talking about only using the factory stuff but this stuff just shifts so nicely :(
Well I haven't actually opened the console and checked it out but when it was becoming loose but still shifting you can pull the linkage up and down on the tranny and the stick will move freely. But I don't think it's that serious a problem it moves around freely and moves left to right normally. Heh but if I push the shifter up and left and right it'll do it. But thanx for the the advice I'll check out the shifter itself and where the rod connects to when I get a chance to tear into the engine bay. haha if the tranny really is busted looks like I"ll have to add new tranny to my list of parts for the rebuild. Damn I got used to it being so loose and shifting well now this crap happens, I better figure out what's the root of this problem so I can fix it once and for all. Oh yeah my tranny is oh 96,000 miles old and I've been using syncroshift for oh 10,000+ miles, who knows it could have been that, ne1 use it for longer than I have?

merlin, u gotta yank your console!!!! that 5 minutes might save u a new tranny ;-)
check the connection closer the the engine, or under where your radio is at (the black rubber cylinder thing) and shoot hurricaneGS an email... he helped me and a buddy fix his 420a when he couldnt shift into 1,3,5 but could still get her into 2,4,r....
good luck bro..

Well xtremeRS was right the shifter linkage that connects to the tranny in the engine bay was just rotating on where it connects to. First I checked in the console, no problems there, that was a waste of time and effort now my interior looks all gutted up now hehe... So I started pulling stuff from the engine bay IE intake piping, battery, etc... Then I took a look and hmm still looks good. What could it be?!!! So I inspect the area a bit more and I see a pin hiding under some metal part. It's the pin that locks the linkage to tranny! One end was crushed and mangled up, looks like my destructive drivin destroyed that stupid pin! Well it looks like I'll be off to the dealership tommorow to go buy that pin, it's quite a meety pin so I don't think I can get it just anywhere.
