27802, dodge stratus drive gear mod Posted by 9D9 MITSU RS, Jul-17-02 04:40 PM
OK, I saw this and I am wanting to do it now. How much do drive gears cost usually? My dad is gonna see what his price is for me, but I wanna know how much they usually are. I'm hoping this will help my acceleration some along with the udp when I get it done.

You should be able to get it for about 120 bucks from Bob Kise, you should be able to find his info around in the boards somewhere. It is a very good modification, I should be doing this too sometime soon here. Supposedly its prob good for about .6 seconds in the 1/4 mile which is a huge improvement. Your speedometer will be off a bit though, unless you go into the dealer and have them use the DRB3 tool to reset the pinion angle to 225*45*15 I believe that should get the speedo close. You will get off the line faster but maybe loose a tad in the top end, but I think its not until over 100 mph so its no biggie.

how much would it be off by? and faster or slower?

I'll sacrifice a little top end for .6 if it's that much of a difference. How much top end does it sacrifice tho? With more power, the top end isn't a factor anyways. I would love to be able to smoke a teg GSR. Right now, I can get them in 1st gear. 2nd, they catch me and get about 1 car or so. I stayed behind 1 the other night tho, and he wasn't really pulling at all. The one that pulled me had a 4 door gsr, and has mad driving skill tho. Btw, for those who are clueless, http://www.geocities.com/rbsounddesigns//finaldrivemod.html

depending on your tire size etc.. your speedo might be off by a max. of 6mph, and it should show it as being faster than you are actually going. Im trying to find all the info, I will post it in a sec

here we go
******************** OK gang...here it is.
The Transfer Gear mod will change your final gear ratio by EXACTLY 6% !
Meaning......after changing the gears.... and assuming a perfectly accurate speedo calibration
Your speedometer will tell you that you've driven 100 miles when you've actually driven only 94 miles! Your speedo will tell you that you're doing 100MPH when actually you are doing 94 MPH. Your speedo will tell you you're doing 50 MPH when you're really doing 47MPH.
(Remember that most Speedos are already inaccurate by about 5 miles per hour and that if you have "17's" that number could be higher...my car with the low profile 15's was 3 miles and hour off before the mod and now is 9 miles per hour off!)
YOU WILL NOT NOTICE ANY DIFFERENCE IN THE TACH OR SPEEDO readings because the sensors are BEFORE the final drive.
You will just be going much slower than the speedometer says!
You will realize a 6% DECREASE in fuel economy too!
````````````````````````````````````` Performance..................
This gear mod will ( under IDEAL conditions ... ) help you realize up to .6 lower ET's in the Quarter and the biggest difference will be realized by the 1/8th.
We calculate that most will see an actual decrease in ET by about .3 ! This is a very conservative assessment.
In auto cross or on an SCCA track the differences WILL BE SUSTANTIAL!
These numbers are HUGE!!!! `````````````````````````````````
This is a MUST for those that are tired of the snail like acceleration out of the hole and will make the mid range runs that much more impressive.
For about 130 bucks...this one is the real deal. ```````````````````````````````````````
Thanks again to Robert Burt for his research!
Sweet stuff! I might actually be able to beat something if I do that :D
What year Stratus and model does it have to come from....might have to go searching the junkyards to get the drive gears. It isn't that hard to replace them is it? Also will you need a tranny cooler after it is done?
Thanks.
how hard would it be to modify it to make the speedometer accurate?
|
27812, RE: dodge stratus drive gear mod Posted by mcgyvr, Jul-19-02 12:38 AM
The only way to make the speedo more accurate is to have a drb3 tool set the pinion angle to the correct setting. This can only be done at a dealership cause they have the tool.
>You should be able to get it for about 120 bucks from Bob >Kise
Is this the best way? Can't I go to a salvage yard and get it myself, or does Bob rebuild the drive gear? Also, is it 120 + shipping or is shipping included. Thanks!
its 86.25 plus shipping, and its a brand NEW gear set, I suppose you could just go get one from a junkyard (I wouldnt) but sure. Its the gear set from a 99 stratus with the 2.0L motor.
How much would they charge to reset the pinion angle?
|
27818, RE: dodge stratus drive gear mod Posted by mcgyvr, Jul-19-02 06:48 AM
Im not sure about the cost to reset pinion angle, but knowing dealerships probably 70-100 bucks, maybe you can get in good with someone at the dealership and they will do it for free.
actually I just called and they said 25 bucks
I'll have this done in a couple weeks. .6 off the et for under $200. It's one of those best bang for the buck mods imo.
27823, RE: dodge stratus drive gear mod Posted by jdpilot, Jul-20-02 09:57 AM
Whos done this? Are there any other drawbacks than the top end prob and speedo gig??
|
27824, RE: dodge stratus drive gear mod Posted by 9D9 MITSU RS, Jul-20-02 10:06 AM
top end isn't even a factor if u add a snail at some point. :P I am gonna have the pinion angle changed so my speedometer is accurate. I have hookups because my dad owns an auto tranny shop. If I can get a great deal on these, I may go into business for a while and hook some 2gnt'ers up. We'll see.
