I went to the machinist who built my motor to show him my car and see what he thinks about the strange idle and the weird noises I am hearing. When I got there he was very impressed on the looks of my car. He said he was expecting a car with a ton of stickers on it and all kinds of other crap. He thought the lines of the car were very nice looking. He even asked if my side skirts were after market. He works on mostly V8's and race cars so I guess he hasnt seen many eclipses. Anyways.... He was checking out my car and he said the idle is fine and its prolly due to the head work. It really is a very mild weird idle. I think i just think its a huge problem because I freak out when anything is weird on my car. We were also hearing a weird sound coming from the engine at idle. He suggested that it could be a loose fly wheel. I think he has to be right because when I press the clutch in the engine is quite. But when the clutch isnt pressed and the cars in neutral you hear a strange noise. I thought it was my pistons but I guess it isnt. Anyone else have this problem?

Almost like the sound when you change gears without the car on. Like a metal sound when you move the the stick. Its hard to explain. And it seems to go in a rythym with the idle.

When my flywheel came loose (yes I had that break too. if it breaks I've experienced it) the BOV sounded crazy deformed when I let off the gas and you could pretty much hear something wasn't too right inside the tranny. Of course mine was probably a little more severe than yours since I only made it from the tranny shop (for a new clutch) to home. Wound up getting a new flywheel and bolts.

So Stan hows the talon doing? You still going to turbo it again? I hope so.

I'm guessing TO bearing is the culprit....

so how can you check if it is loose? if you take off that access plate on the bottom and wiggle the drive plate would it be loose?

Well I have to get it running because I'm moving within the next month so I'm going to have to buy a cheap header and starter. From their I'm gonna collect turbo parts. I swear I could have been long done with it but two project cars is damn near impossible because you tend to focus on one. If I start on the talon now the VW wont get many more mods but I must admitt I'm starting to get 420A fever again especially seeing all you turbo guys running low 14s and better.

Yeah throw out bearing could be the culprit. It is attatched to the clutch fork and is ultimately what disengages the pressure plate of the clutch.

Stan you should have recorded the sound of everythign you broke, We could have put together a one stop shopping for ifentifying sounds.

I also get a wierd noise when my car idles. It almost sounds like a bunch of nuts and bolts rattling about inside a plastic cup. It only happens when my clutch is disengaged (no foot on pedal). As soon as you push the pedal in, the noise stops. I also notice that if I idle with the A/C on the noise is much louder. As soon as I turn the A/C off the noise gets quieter, but does not go away. Push the clutch pedal in and the noise goes away.

I also hear the same rattling sound if I happen to be at low RPMs in second gear or third gear while moving through a parking lot or something. This strange noise started around 30k miles. I now have 54k miles two years later and the noise has only become louder. Funny thing is, my car drives just fine.
