27115, Think i busted a Tranny Mount Posted by Showtime72, Jul-10-02 08:02 AM
I think i busted a tranny mount but am not 100% sure... when i put my car in reverse and start to accelerate a little i feel a jolt (and a popping sound)... it doesn't seem affect the motion backwards (like doesn't stall or anything).. then when i get into first and start drivin a hear a little pop and the same joltin feeling coming from the engine bay.. its on and off.. some days i notice it and others i dont... i have a feeling its the tranny mount but not 100% sure.. just wanted to see if anyone has had a problem like this..

the front and rear engine mounts are actually connected to the tranny. You may have torn one.

The front one is easy. the rear one is a PITA to get to, but once you're there it isn't all that bad either. I'd suggest checking them out and making sure the brackets themselfs are fine, then checking out the rubber dampers inside the mounts for cracks and splits. if the mounts are sound, just get some Energy Suspension mouter mount inserts.

Right now I'm driving on all 4 busted mounts... the thing is HORRIBLE to drive. It sucks ASS. Parts should be here Friday (~$200 for all 4 mounts). I will put up picks of the old mounts after I replace all of them.
Whatever other people say - MM Inserts will NOT fix a broken or torn mount. I speak from experience on this one.

I think I have problems too. The car doesnt ,"pull" like it use to. Vefore It use to knowck you back during a launch, now it just clunks and goes. I thought It might be a suspension/ wheel problem. It was on and off too, now its constant and only does it under a sudden press of the gas pedal or hard stop(as in not a long and smooth one). All I step on the gas and all I hear is clunk....hit the brakes, Clunk again. Its comming from somwhere in the passenger side or back of the engine compartment. Where are the mounts located? Im turbo too so could the extra force have caused this?
oh BTW its on a 98 GS auto.

Ok... the tell tale sign of motor mount failure is to cruise along at like 4K RPM and sharply let off of the gas. If the car bucks back and forth - your mounts are busted. If you shift really hard and the car bucks back and forth - your mounts are busted. My car makes the exact noise you are speaking of... I don't know exactly where it is coming from, but it does it every time I shift - every time I let off of the gas - and every time I go from a stop.
If you launch your car hard enough times without motor mount inserts - your motor mounts will break. I am sure of it. Don't just try to buy inserts to fix it... get new mounts and start from square 1. Trust me.
