27105, Synthetic oil and rebuild Posted by Dave_FL, Jul-10-02 07:41 AM
How long after the break in period should I wait till I use synthetic? I have a little over 600 miles and I think this weekend I am going to use synthetic. It should be around 700 miles by then.

Owen from ARD told me that at 1501 miles to put synthetic in and never put anything else in. That is what I did.

27109, regular until 500 miles... Posted by Skrilla, Jul-10-02 02:20 PM
...then change it with regular and again at 1500. Despite what anybody tells you the engine is completely broke in at 1500miles. At the 500 miles all the shavings are finished leaving the honed mechanical parts so thats the reason for the 1st one at 500 miles

Is there a write-up anywhere, or can anyone give me more info about the best way to break in a new engine/new engine parts? Just some basic guidelines to follow like: change your oil every ____ miles with ____ oil. ____ brand of oil works best. Vary your rpm's while driving between ____ and ____.
I need more info on this. I'm picking up my engine today so I'll be starting my break-in this weekend.
Thanks!

There is no official way. Just take it easy on the engine untill you get 500 miles. I didnt go over 3000 rpm for 400 miles. I used valvoline 20w/50 oil for my break in. And now at 500 miles I am boosting about 5-6 psi. Do an oil change at around 500-600 miles with regular oil. Then at 1500 miles put in the mobil 1.

Is there any way to make SURE you don't boost? Like wire the wastegate open or something. If I bypass my boost controller, my wastegate is set for 8psi (Stage II Hahn). So do you just have to be VERY careful not to build boost at first?
Any is there any specific non-synthetic oil brand that works better? Or does it not really matter because you don't push the engine that hard anyway? And why 20w50, because it's thicker?
Thanks! I'm leaving work now to go pick up my engine!

if you step on it slowly you wont go into boost.. also just make sure ur wastegate is hooked up to the turbo (remove boost controller) to be safe.. just take it easy slowwwwwlllyyy =)

Okay, thanks guys! I'll be sure to keep all this in mind when I'm breaking it in. And OMG, the engine looks so good! It was covered in oil and dirt buildup when I brought it to the shop, now it's all nice and clean, and the guys at the shop took the liberty of painting the block black and the head silver! It looks SWEET! Do all shops automatically do that for you?
Thanks again!
