26923, powershifting an auto tranny??
Posted by ajna_star, Jul-08-02 04:14 PM
from FAQ section:
Start out in Low gear.
- Power brake. This means hold down the brake pedal with left foot and give throttle to about 3000rpm.
- Launch by taking foot off brake and simultaneously flooring accelerator.
- Push the stick forward for each gear at about 6000 rpm.

is this gonna screw up my tranny?
thanks

well, its sure not gonna halp it, haha. I wouldnt power shift all the time. I used to get so mad my 1st car was an auto, so I would put in neutral and rev to rev limiter, and yank it in drive... wow, probably not a good idea, but the car still runs. :-)

I hear its bad if you manually shift an auto. I have an auto (unfortuanetly) and I just let the transmission do the shifting by itself. Some people (on here) say that they have lost transmissions which they give credit to shifting manualy. IMO don't do it. Later

You dont need to manually shift it out of gears, our trannies are pretty smart in that if you hit the rev limiter/fuel cut it will automatically shift into each gear, so basically just leave it in 1st and gun it and it will shift all the way up to 4th, but again this is pretty bad for the tranny, but also our trannies are supposed to be faster if you leave it in first, the shift points are closer together with it in 1st or 2nd.

You're gonna have a hard time revving to 3000 with a stock torque converter. It won't go that high!

so whats the best way to launch from a stop? rev to 3k in neutral and drop it into drive? thanks

Yeah, thats the way to do it if you want to pick pieces off the street afterwards :-)

Do they even make aftermarket torque converters for our car?
If so who?
What kind of performance gain?

And is it better to let the tranny do ALL the shifting, ie OD off, then we leave it in drive and powerbrake to 2500 or 2000 rpm and let it go?

Someone said our trannies are "faster", compared to the manual version or compared to other auto trannies as a whole?

Thanks

When you power brake and let go of the brake to launch dont floor it hard.. push it down quicking but not to slow. If you floor it all you get it timing retardation thus slowing you down.. slowly punch the pedal down for best results.

DONT rev in N and drop into Drive.. very stupid. Put it in 1 and let the car shit at rev limit :).

Happy Launching! I have to practice launching at 2-3k in my Rex.. I just need the whole traction thing..
