ok guys with test pipes, are they worth getting? does it make the car sould ishy ? if so what do you do to change it, is it best to get a test pipe or a gutted cat ? on ebay it says 10-15hp that's gotta be BS!

I think a testpipe is a good mod IF you have a turbo. The catalytic converter is the most restrictive part of your exhaust. Freeing up that restriction will greatly improve airflow thus adding more horsepower. It's not really a HUGE gain, but after driving around with my testpipe for a few months, then having to put my cat back on for emissions, I could definitely tell the difference!

As far as sound, it made my exhaust sound deeper at idle and cruising speeds, and a little louder and raspy sounding at WOT.

But like I said, it's only a good mod for a turbocharged car. If you are still N/T, removing the cat will decrease your backpressure and can actually make you slower. At least, that's what happens at my elevation (6000ft).

Backpressure! AAAAAAAAAAAH! Ya don't want backpressure, you want exhaust velocity! It is the velocity of the intake and exhaust that create torque. At higher RPMs, there is a higher volume of exhaust gasses, so velocity is less of an issue. Sorry, backpressure isone of the words that kills me!

If you want more power at a ceertain rpm, it's VELOCITY, VELOCITY, VELOCITY. The faster the intake or exhaust gasses are moving, the more power you will make. This is why mufflers slow you down, and why 3 inch exhausts on a 2.0 L all motor engine slow you down (especially at low rpms), the pipe is too big for the amount of exhaust you are pushing out, and your exhaust gas velocity decreases costing you power

Get the test pipe. I love mine.

The first thing you'll notice is the exhaust note. It's louder. And when you open it up, it gets all raspy like you're burnin rice. I hate that, so I put in a big-ol glasspack to replace the little POS we have. There are other ways to detune the extra-long-grain growl, it comes down to a mattter of sonic pleasure. Your magnaflow may sound better then the stock one, but you may want to replace the glass, or get the GST tailpipe(it has an extra resonator).

You will lose some torque on the lower end of your RPM range. Which is less noticible then the fact that...

You will GAIN horsepower in the higher end of your RPM range. Its definately a good gain.

The conversation degrades inevitablly to "streetability". If you can't stand the fact of loosing the slightest amount of power at any point in the range("Oh I can't pass as fast by stomping on it in 5th any more..boo hoo") then you won't like the testpipe. The fact of the matter is that the new found power should make your car quicker. No matter what, even right now, if you really want good power, you have to downshift anyway. The only way you're going to know for sure is to get one.

yeah i got one today 22 bucks shipped, from someone on dsm trader, metal jim, did you have to do the cel thing ?

No CEL here. I've had the test pipe for months now(probably around 6), and I still haven't gotten a CEL with it.

You have an OBDI car, which will not pop a CEL for a test pipe at all. You only have an upstream O2 sensor, no downstream O2 sensor to moniter CatCon efficiency. All '95 DSMs are OBDI, and, as such, will not throw a CEL for much of anything.

Yeah, I have a rear O2 sensor....hmmm - maybe I have a 96 exhaust? I don't know.

Not all '95s are OBDI.

Our '95 has a rear O2 sensor as well.
