Hmmm. so it actually works. I'll have to gve it a try.

Some guys over at ASOG have done it...

best modification for little over 100 bucks, believe it or not its a .6 sec gain in the 1/4 mile. but its also a 6% loss in fuel economy, and your speedo will be off by approx 3-6 mph (based on 16" rims). but it works schweet. really narrows the field between auto and manual. And with a high stall TC your moving even better.

get them from bob kise, there is a post somewhere with his info he gives like 15% over cost, it comes to like a little over 100 bucks

Yes it's for the auto only
A few guys on ASOG have done it, they all have the 2.5 V6 engine
AFAIK no one yet have done it on the I4

Basically you are swapping the final drive gears of the A604 tranny for the gears of the Stratus/Breeze with the 2.0 SOHC and auto tranny

Damn! I forgot about the speedo. It will be off by a percentage, so the error will get larger as you go faster. That sucks. The ECU gets is speed signal from the TCU and the TCU gets it from the output speed sensor. The output speed sensor is before the drive gears that are getting changed. In order to keep your speedo accurate, you'd need a converter box to modify the signal coming from the TCU to ECU. I've seen these before on trucks. These guys get them when they put huge tires on. Anybody know where to get one of these converter boxes? I know I need an accurate speedo...

Corbin, all you have to do its go into the dealership and have them use their DRBIII tool to set the correct pinion angle after you install the gears

The DRBIII is the scan tool right? I didn't realize it could actually changer parameters (thought it just scanned). Could you give me a more detailed description of what needs to be done and what I have to tell them. From my past experience, they aren't going to have a clue what I'm talking about...and I'm going to have to convince them it is possible.

is there any reason why this wouldn't work on our tranny's? has anyone done it to an eclipse?

have a DRBIII tool set the pinion angle to 225*50*15 after you install the gears and you should be close. There is a formula somewhere, but I cant find it right now.

And yes this mod should work just fine, you have the same trannnies as the avenger, but again you must have a tranny cooler in place first before doing this modification.

Or you could just get a stick.

I would assume since it's putting a bit more strain on the tranny.

Its not really putting more strain on the tranny...its actually making most of the tranny's job easier (giving it more mechanical advantage). The differential and driveshafts will see more torque though. You will be running a slightly higher RPM in every gear, so that might make you want a cooler. I still haven't heard if anyone has done this to a I-4 2GNT...just V6's. I'm going to have to pop open that side panel on my trans to count the gear teeth...to make sure we don't already have gears of that ratio.

Yes its been done to an eclipse. I’ve had it done for about a month now and it really does help out. Its really quite easy to install, just make sure you have a steering wheel puller like the write up says and a really long breaker bar. I don’t recommend using an impact gun because the vibration from the impact hammer can ruin the bearings. Also a tranny cooler would be a wise investment as well.

How noticeable was it on the eclipse ?
And did if you still have the old gears can you do a tooth counts
so we will know
