26159, I want "all motor" someone please talk me out of it Posted by caliboy23, Jun-27-02 02:06 PM
I just went through my 3rd turbo 4g63. I hate turbo charged cars right now. There are SO many things that can go wrong. I just sold the car today and I'm convinced that when the new motor goes into my 97 GS next week, that I want to go all motor.
Only problem is that I'm afraid I won't be satisfied with the power. The car I just sold was a 90 fwd turbo with a japanesse motor in it with only an intake and boost controler running 13 pounds. The motor only had 35k on it and the head gasket went. But I'm sure it was faster than my 97 GS will be with all motor and some porting.
So there's my dilema. I want plenty of power, but I really worry about the reliability of going turbo. Especially on a motor that wasn't designed for a turbo.
Please feel free to give me your 2 cents.

right now I am rebuilding my engine for all motor and will probalby eventually get nitrous. I have the howell bottom end kit with 10.5 pistons and the top end kit with the nitrous grind cams. I think that going all motor with a built one, you will have quite a bit of power, then if you hit the little go faster button, you have alot without all of the maintenance of a turbo. that the way i look at it anyways.

well the 420a motor is a lot more reliable compared to the 4g63( trust me i own a dead 4g63 right now) , if you want to go fast , get a star stage 2 kit , of if not talk to shaun at newedgeracing, get a stage 2, the 420a's like boost, eventully youll crack a piston, then you rebuild it with forged internals, and run more boost, talk to a guy named Darkone, hes boosting and loving it, the all motor is good too, but a turbo is better bang for the buck, if i ever total my car ill get a 420a and boost it, i love my car but the 420s just a better motor, lotus designed the block and head , its tough , well later

That's another problem though. With no ECU availabilities how would I compensate for the NOS. I'm told that if you wanna run a 100 shot you have to retard your ignition or you'll get detenation. And then there's fuel. I'm sure the stock ecu could accomidate a 75 shot but my 90 fwd turbo with only an intake and 2 extra pounds of boost beat a GS with bolt on's and a 75 shot.

Get an MSD or Crane ignition to retard the timing.

Shit happens, and quite frequently in the boosting world. it comes with the territory, expect it
>Only problem is that I'm afraid I won't be satisfied with the power.
Who is satisfied with the power they have? Hell even guys running 10, 11 seconds in the quarter are wanting more.
>The motor only had 35k on it and the head gasket went.
Your selling the car just because of a headgasket?Hmmm...

With lots of power there is always going to be reliability issues. Doesn't matter if you are n/a or boosting or wind-driven. Its a machine, its gonna break sooner or later. I'm not trying to sound like a dick here but just make a decision and go with it. If you don't want your car to break then don't mod it. If you want power then expect shit to go wrong. Good luck to ya!!

Hey nice car. Looks exactly like mine except the rims. Why did you get the Enkies? Oh well, to each their own.
Anyway, yes I sold the car just because of the head gasket. You might have noticed previously in the post that the car that I just sold was the 3rd 4G63 I had that broke down. I can understand doing major mods to a car and then the head gasket eventually goes. But we're talking about 1 month after the motor went in the head gasket blew. It's safe to say that I'm completely done with 4G63's forever. And "shit happens" doesn't exactly fly with me. Especially since that was my only transportation to and from work.
Also "make a dissision and go with it" I posted that because I want others that know more than I do, to give me advice to help influence that dissision.
And as far as going 10, or 11 seconds in the quarter mile. I don't need that. I just wanna beat most honda's and the occasional V-8.
So unless you wanna give some good advice that would influence my dission between going all motor and turbo then don't bother criticizing my posts.

going all motor with high compression and that you will have to retard timing to prevent detonation, as well as use a high level octane. you will most likely have to use octane booster and control your fuel.

I wasn't trying to critisize your post bud, I was just telling you like it is. Shit DOES happen, ask anyone here. You don't like the answers I gave..... but they are the truth and your are going to have to realize that. Nobody is going to hold your hand while you are here!!
P.S. YEAH, what in the hell is wrong with Enkeis?

Just as I told him. Going all motor wont keep you from blowing up another motor.
A blown head gasket?! And how is using high compression with Nos not going to blow your stock head gasket(or another motor)?

Jap spec motor with 35k on it?
That was one of your problems.
Not to start a 420A vs. 4g63 battle, but imo, it's bs to say that one of them is better or more reliable then the other. In the end it comes down to the maintenance.
I have 4 cars with the 4g63 and although 2 of them aren't running right now, there's no way I can say that the 420A is any better. I've had just as much trouble with it, all motor.
Like others say, if you wanna go all motor with a 420A, expect parts to break sooner or later, depending on how much you push it. Maybe you've just had bad luck with your 4g63s, who knows? Perhaps you'll have just as much bad luck with the 420A.
So, if you know the 4g63 in and out, and you find one that's well maintained, has good compression and has been taken care of, it being turbo is no good reason to decide to go all motor with a 420A instead.
Good luck to you, and whatever you decide to do, stay away from those jap spec engines ;)

If you don't want to go turbo. You can always go with a 2.4L 420a swap :) Then, go kick some some honda @$$ ;)
