ok, can somebody give me an education on these things? i'm getting an auto-meter phantom egt gauge and i'm confused about what probe to get. they have at least 3 different probes in the little auto-meter catalog, but they don't really explain the differences. they just call them by different names like professional, competition, etc. argh... i dunno which one i need! the summit tech guy said the most expensive one is the better, faster-acting one, but he didn't sound very convincing. anybody know for sure what the differences are and which one would be best for me?

I can't tell you which is the best of the autometers, however, I have heard that their probes are NOTORIOUS for being slow-reacting.

I might tend to believe the sales associate and get their most expensive one. Either that, or buy a Westach.com probe and use it with your autometer guage.

I've been told that combination works well. I'm sorry I can't verify that or direct you to which specific autometer probe works the best.

From what I seen, the main difference is how the probes mount. Take the competition probe, it is made to be welded into your exhaust. As for the "street" kind, those come with a metal strap/hose clamp that requires your to drill a hole into your exhaust, insert the probe, then use the strap to hold it into place. Hope this helps, lataz...

i guess it would be easier to just drill a hole and use the clamp-type, but then it's probably gonna have to go after the exhaust manifold in the down-pipe. will it even fit around a 2.5" pipe? that shouldn't be too bad i guess if i just figure in another 150-200 deg. or so for the actual temp, right? the highest priced auto-meter probe is $160 from summit. anybody know what the westach probe goes for?

The street probes come with a clamp, which is what I have. I have heard the classic DSM line about using a westach probe, but my autometer is working fine so I am ok with it. I did put mine int he downpipe, but it should fit around a runner no problem. It is a large clamp. I would have to look at it again to remember for sure, but that is not happening anytime soon.

I originally bought that clamp style probe and it just didn't look very appealing to me, nor did it appear it would mount nicely on the #4 runner's elbow of the HRC Exhaust manifold.

Therefore, I sent it back for a bayonnet style Westach probe. I like this one a lot. True enough, I got a performance shop to drill the hole and use a NPT pipe tap to drill it in the exhaust manifold, but I wanted it done right. (1/8" NPT) I'm sure one could do it themselves should they order a NPT tap, but I ordered one from a machine shop, and they were so damn slow, I took it somehwere to get it done. ($25)

I really like mine a lot. It's so fast reacting, that at the moment I switch gears, the EGT temps fall accordingly.
