25244, front mount intercooler Posted by stangcobra01, Jun-13-02 02:12 PM
I know this isn't 420a related but i have a 01 SVT Cobra and i was wondering if there is a way to have a supercharger and run a front mount intercooler with it?

if you run a centrifugal style supercharger, then yes.. because of their turbo like compressor design a FMIC (front mount intercooler) is a good thing and needed for high boost levels. If it's a eaton or 'roots' style BLOWER supercharger. then NO. you can't run a FMIC (but you don't need to run one either) although some have built in air/water intercoolers in the supercharger housing.
Hope that answers you question.

yes, can it be a vortech supercharger if not then do you know any sites where i can see the superchargers you are talking about? thanks

yes a vortech is a centrifugal super charger. i think paxton also has an application for the cobra.

actually... it IS possible to have a frount mount IC with a roots style blower. ive seen it done...one of my best friends had one on his JRSC Si. now granted...he didnt keep it, but not because it didnt cool the air as expected...but because it idled like crap and revved up between shifts(like he didnt know how to drive a stick) because the system had to fill up ALL that pipeing with vaccum before it would correct itself. he now has one of, if not the only, Air-to-water intercooled JRSC Si's in existence. completely fabricated the whole thing in the shop, with a little help from the same guy that built my FMIC. ill get some pics of it up soon as i get em.

Yup your right it is possible to install a FMIC on a roots or screw type blower. Go pick up a copy of Supercharged! by Corky Bell (yup same Corky Bell that wrote Maximum Boost) that will answer every question you would need to know man. It's a great book.

i suppose i should have clarified, you can do it with a roots style, but it is completely pointless and will actually hurt the performance of the vehicle because of the way that roots blowers create boost (blowing air into the intake manifold faster then the motor can suck it up, thefore preasurizing it) and if you had all that piping and crap it'd really hurt the effiency of the blower, which is the best thing they have going for them, they don't heat up the air nearly as much as a turbo so therefore don't NEED a front mount Air/Air intercooler.
and yes the Vortech line of superchargers are all Centrifugal style. two other companies to look into are 'ATI Prochargers' ( http://www.procharger.com/ ) and 'Powerdyne superchargers' ( http://www.powerdyne.com/ )
also a site i found that sells Vortech kits and has lots of info on them (SPECIFICALLY for MUSTANGS) is http://www.alternativeauto.com/ they really seem to know their shit considering the cars they have built on their website.

it worked...dyno showed good gains, it just wasnt feasible for daily driving, cause of the rough idleing and when shifting.

ahh.. so one of those where the plus's didn't outway the minus's.. but since i don't know all that much about SC systems.. i suppose I couldn't be 100% right about them.. haha..
