Searched the archives and the web... found nothing, so:

I am rebuilding right now, and was wondering: should I get a 3-angle valve job, inspection, or other machine work done to the head?

Upon my novice inspection, they all look pretty good, no dings or scratches, and fairly clean overall. My (wet) compression was really good on all cylinders considering I had 3 broken pistons, so I'm pretty sure the valves are still happy. I have a 1999 420a with 65k miles on it.

I'm only concerned because Mike W @ RRE said that generally when you detonate there will be some valve damage. I had tons of detonation, but the valves themselves don't appear to have noticed.

I would not worry about the head. I didn't have any damaged valves when mine went. But if you feel like spending the extra money then go for it man.

I got a 3 angle valve job and I really didnt need it. You might as well do all you can while the engine is in pieces. Its just the safe thing to do. Your gonna be pissed when the head needs some work and you could have done it while its apart.

are you still building the 2.4 or are you just going to rebuild your current engine??

Dan, even without boost, my valves were really dirty and the edges were not very smooth. I would say get one just to be safe. You should also have them hot soak the head and do other things that they normally do. The whole thing for the valve job, milling, hot soak, etc cost me 325 through RRE. They have their machine shop do it.
