Do 2g NT have speed limiter's? Cause I have a 97 GS and I can't get past 105. When I hit 105 the revs drop to around 4-5k and just stay there, no movement at all and the car will not go any faster. Can someone please help me on how to fix this.

do you have a 5-speed or an auto?? If you have an auto its probably because you still have the O/D on. If your 5-speed I dont know what the problem is, we DO NOT have a speed limiter. Ive had my car past 125 a few times

actually there is a speed limiter, but its around 140. unless you have a GSX, they did that because of the stock tires. mines at 135. the comptuer cuts the fuel to keep you going any faster, but when that happens you can feel it! theres a computer mod you can do on dsm.org for this, but i dont think thats your problem. my car is also an auto and i can get past 105 with OD on.

Not this again!!!!!!!!!!
2gnt cars do not have speed limiters. They don't.Period.GST's are the onlt Eclipses that do because of the cheapo H-rated tires they come with.

Also, I had the cheap ass stock wheels last time this happened, and i wouldn't go past 105. Do you think now with my z rated tires i will be able to or what? I dont know, not that tires have anything to do with the power though right?

sorry guys, i just looked at that again and i was wrong. its only on turbo cars. im a dumbass i can admit it tho!
time for some stronger coffee!

I don't know what the deal is with these cars, but just like the guy above said about the 135mph limiter is correct. Because the RS's, GS's, and GS-T's have stock H rated tires, there limiter is set to 135mph. I should know, I've taken my GS to the limit, and it has a hard time just getting to that 135mph mark once I hit about 125mph. At about 125mph, the accelleration starts to slow down, and at about 130mph, it damn near gets to a crawl to 135mph.
The GSX's don't have limiters cause there stock tires are Z rated.
I forgot where I first read this at, but I think it was at Clubdsm.com somewhere.

Z rated tires just means that they can handle higher speeds. Different rated tires won't effect how fast your vehicle goes. Now different size tires will make a difference.

If your going all out you want your OD OFF! Mine wont go pass 100mph with the OD ON. Turn it off and see what happens.

24575, RE: Why the Hell is 105 MPH my top Posted by DarkOne, Jun-05-02 04:30 AM
THERE IS NO SPEED LIMITER. Period! it does not exist. i have gotten my car to 140 before, i know other 2GNT's that have gotten to redline in fifth. There is no speed limiter!
I hate to sound rude here, but this has come up so many times. Anyone who says the 2GNT has a speed based limiter is just flat wrong.
|
24576, RE: Why the Hell is 105 MPH my top Posted by Lord_Khan, Jun-05-02 04:38 AM
You don't sound rude Darkone. I know not to argue with you, cause I know you know your stuff. But why is it that our cars don't seem to go past 135? Maybe were using the wrong term as far as speed limiter, and mean governor perhaps. I don't know all the terminology all the time, cause I'm still learning.
I'm going by personal experience of going up against my friend VR6 which when were gunning it on the highway at WOT, he gets to 135mph, and keeps accelerating more and more past 135mph with no problem at all, whereas my car gets to that speed, and won't go past it whatsoever. Could it be that I need a cat back for higher speed HP? What do you think?
|
24577, RE: Why the Hell is 105 MPH my top Posted by 1TuffRS, Jun-05-02 04:36 AM
Lord Kahn, just because you couldnt get your car past 135 does not mean we have a speed limiter. At a certain point your car will reach a standoff between the available power and air resistance/downforce. If you had more power you would have gone faster easy as that.
No the tires have nothing to do with how fast your car will go, as in they will not limit your ability to go a certain speed. If they are not Z-rated tires, however, I really wouldnt go faster than they are rated to because of saftey issues. You should definitely have the O/D off when doing those high speed runs.

1tuffRS,
Thanks, I think you answered the question I just asked DarkOne. Makes sense considering my friends VR6 Jetta has nothing but more raw horsepower pouring out of it than my GS. Thanks for the help. I'm going to look into getting a catback.
|
24579, RE: Why the Hell is 105 MPH my top Posted by Z87RSMan, Jun-05-02 05:31 AM
Getting a cat-back might increase your horsepower a little, but I don't see you accelerating far beyond 135 just because of that. From 0-120 MPH, acceleration is horsepower vs. weight, after 120 it is horsepower vs. aerodynamic drag. Our cars certainly look great but I don't know exactly how good the drag is. Turbo or some hardcore all motor is really the only way to keep going once your reaching those speeds because you definitely don't want to use N20 in 5th gear.

Actually, our cars are very "slippery" as some would put it. I believe for the 97-99 GS was .030. Same as a 3rd gen RX-7. I'm curious about the co-efficient of the 95-96 front end with no spoiler on the rear.
|
24582, RE: Why the Hell is 105 MPH my top Posted by Breezio, Jun-05-02 04:11 PM
my zx2 has like a .031 drag coeffiencent.. and i'm pretty damn sure the late 90's saturn coupes have a drag co of .027 or something way low like that.. funny huh? hehe.

24583, RE: Why the Hell is 105 MPH my top Posted by bigbrent88, Jun-05-02 04:58 PM
Our cars have a .29 Cd, not sure if thats in GST/GSX or RS/GS trim. Also the new G35 has a .26 Cd with zero lift aero which is sweet beyond all means, you could have downforce on that car and still only have .29Cd whereas we would have a .32 which is equal to Civic, damn non-aero civics, lol.

24584, RE: Why the Hell is 105 MPH my top Posted by The1Bill, Jun-05-02 05:03 PM
Well, the '95-'96 with the low 3 piece spoiler has a CD of .29. That is better then the Vettes of the day, and equal to the Vettes of today. Oddly enough, the 3G Eclipse is back up to .32 or .33 or so... Ah well. Way to step it back, Mitsubishi! -=B-=

I don't know about the rest of you with the high spoiler, but when I get above 110 or so I get some funky movement in the rear end of the car. Tire pressure is good so I was assuming it was the high spoiler catching wind. I don't notice it as much since I lowered the car but its there. Brian (JustOne) has an aftermarket aluminum spoiler and says he can feel the added downforce in the rear end when driving at high speeds. Sorry, I know this is kind of off topic but you were talking about CD and all.

the word everyone was looking for up there is drag limited. eventually with enough power you will get to gear/rev limited then you will get traction limited, like the guys on the salt flats. -Josh

The 2gnt Info&Specs page says these cars have a top speed of 124. This isn't right then???

I used to think the same. Make sure your seat is close enough so you can actually floor it. :) Yes, I thought 105-110 was it, then I realized it wasn't 100% floored. Now it's way faster. This was when I first got it too btw.

I've only taken my '99 2 ~130mph, but my '97 hit 145mph no prob & still had power 2 go faster... was scared sh*tless as I didn't have a radar detector w/ me @ the time (going down I-65 ;)
P.S. No limiters on either of mine... obviously 5spd

alright i have to add my $.02 to this topic. ive taken my rs past 135 on 880 over here in the bay area in nearly stock form. the really amazing thing is that it seemed to be so glued to the ground. this was shocking to me because most any other cars ive been in, the faster you go the more it shakes and rattles. my car felt more stabile and confident at 130 then it does just coasting down the freeway at 65 haha. and there is a reason for it. i really wish i could remmeber where i was reading but i remmeber something about how our cars were designed with EXTREAMLY impressive areodynamics. something that you wouldnt usually get while spending under a hundred grand. considering the fact that im going turbo with this rather inexepensive little beautiful car soon, the areodynamic factors of our cars give me that little extra confidence for my goal: building an amazing sports car. i am glad we actually have potential for an amazing all around sports car. i love drag racing and all but...if you just wanted to mash a thousand horsepower down a 1/4mile as fast as ya can, you can go get an old chevy. -paul.

Umm was anyone reading what he said:
"Aight, thanks for the help guys. I'm gonna turn the OD OFF and see what happens. Hopefully I'll get past damn 105"
I think turning it off would stop you from going over 105, not help you you over it. I know you can have it off to accelerate but I think turning it back on would be a good idea. LoL

24592, RE: Why the Hell is 105 MPH my top Posted by 1TuffRS, Jun-07-02 11:06 AM
Thats what he needs to do. OD is like adding another gear, with it on you will be at lower rpms at a given speed than with it off. Kind of like trying to move from a stop in second instead of first. Its a lot easier to do it in first. Now if he redlines with the OD off it would then be a good idea to turn it on.

24593, RE: Why the Hell is 105 MPH my top Posted by RSClipse9d7, Jun-09-02 01:31 PM
I know what you mean ^^^^ but I was saying that he shouldn't try to go 105 with it off. He should start with it off and then turn it on once it redlines in 3rd. Sorry... I should have been more clear.

but, if i'm not mistaken, if you redline an ATX 2gnt in 3rd.. you'll be going 110MPH.. :) so ya wouldn't have to click it on till then.

Seriously, I drive an auto RS and I take it pass 105 daily w/ the overdrive on the whole way (I've really never turned it off even driving in the streets). A couple of times i made it to 115-120 before running out of road. But, it does redline every gear (i dunno if it's suppose to be that way though LOL).

24596, RE: Why the Hell is 105 MPH my top Posted by euro_clipse, Jun-10-02 02:10 PM
Ok guys, I live in Germany with an American GS automatic. When I cruise the Autobahns, my car maxes out at 124 or 125mph. I've done runs with and without the O/D. This car redlines at that speed in 3rd gear without the O/D. Then when I switch the O/D on, I get no more acceleration, it stays right at the same speed. I forget what the rpm's drop to, like 4800 or so. So the O/D has nothing to do with the top speed, just lets you cruise the highways with a lower rpm, possibly increasing gas mileage. (Not by much though) So the O/D shouldn't be any issue with his problem.
|
24597, RE: Why the Hell is 105 MPH my top Posted by Breezio, Jun-11-02 01:51 AM
^^^ that's only cause the car doesn't have enough power to push the car faster at those speeds with the gearing the 4th/OD gear uses.. if your car was more powerful (like with a turbo kit) once you had to click the OD on at 124mph it'd still keep creaping up cause the car would have enough power then to push past the arodynamic drag with the OD's gear ratio. anyway.. just thought i'd point that out.

Yes I've also felt that between 105 &110 was max but now that I think about it the car did keep accelerating but I was rolling so damned fast everything was a blur and I was passing cars so fast I was scared shitless, however there is a rev-limiter somewhere in there I was speed shifting and felt my car stop pulling at redline which is good, I totally agree about the handling of the eclipse it's as smooth as silk cornering and I can actually accelerate in on/off ramps and turns where other cars have to brake, the only real drawback to going for the max is the cost of the speeding ticket if you ever get caught rolling past 100, my radar detector could work fast enough -but one last thing guys on the real- KEEP IT SAFE and buckle up when you ride that hard we don't want to read about you on the front page like that 18 year old driving the honda that lost control on the interstate and went airborne landing in a car dealership tearing up seven brand new camaro's.
