I'm really asking for my brothers car, but I'm also going to ask about my 2GNT as well. My car is fine right now, but I may have slightly damaged them from always downshifting to slow down since I've had my car. Like I said, the car drives and even shifts fine, but there is a slight resistance when going to second gear sometimes, so I may need to replace my synchros in the far future.

Anyway, my brother bought a 94' Civic a few months ago, and finally got his 15-day tags to get it inspected yesterday. Well, come to find out that the car hardly won't go into 3rd gear unless forced (which results in terrible grinding), and when in 3rd gear, it doesn't move.

For you guys that have had your synchros worked on, or replaced, what kind of price is he looking at to get it fixed. Besides the synchro issue, the car is in really good condition, and is ready to be modded. I feel kind of bad for my brother cause it was his 21st birthday yesterday, and this is his first car, and he has put a lot of cash into it to get it to get it up to specs to be inspected, but never really drove it. He wanted to get it inspected yesterday for his birhtday. He bought it from a coworker of mines friend. When we went to look at it, and drove with the guy, the car drove fine, and when the guy delivered it, it drove fine. That was about 3 months ago. Now we have run into this issue. Anyway, any advice, or help will be appreciated.

I have been meaning to fix mine under warranty, but the shop that Satan's insurance company goes through wants me to sign off on $800, in case the insurance company won't cover it. Seeing as I don't have $800, I haven't done it. The guy says at least a day of labor pulling the tranny and getting it all apart. The parts, I believe he said something like $200 if I remember right. That is for our car though, so it could be different for a Civic.

I guess it's going to be pretty expensive then. Do you guys suggest just getting the synchros fixed, or replacing the whole transmission? I've seen guys on here talking about getting a used transmission for 2GNT's for like $650, but how much is the labor to get it installed?

It takes a couple of specialty tools and a jig to open and work on those transmissions. When you downshift to second, try to fiind a "happy RPM" that it seems to go in nicely. It's called rev matching. Basically it's the RPM where that gear is lined up best with the next one and the synchro doesn't have to match the diffent gears as much. Since 2g's are getting more popular, you might call around to an experienced trans rebuilder and see how much. Synchs only go out b/c they go out of spec. The "blocking rings" are like 5 bux a piece and put everything back into spec. The dealer will sell you ONLY the sychro assemb. for 100+ bux. It's your choice but a GOOD used trans can be had for 500 if you don't want to fool with it. Your brother can get a trans for probably half that.

that's not rev matching that like power downshifting. Rev matching is basically double clutching. Anyway try doing this. When you downshift put it in neutral or as your going into a another gear blip the throttle into what you think the revs will land at when you downshift. Now if you wanna downshift into second you gonna have to rev a lot more than 1k from where you are though (1k more than where you are is usually where it'll land but now for 2nd). I have to like double clutch heel and toe to get it to downshift into second smoothy.

Try changing your tranny fluid might make it shift smoother.
