24364, Howell bottom end kit Posted by Millertime, Jun-02-02 04:13 PM
Hey guys. My car has been down for quite a while now, and I a slowly getting enough money to fix it. I let the car run basically out of oil, and about a month later it ended up totally messing up my engine. My rods sound like they are a bunch of rocks being thrown around the engine. To fix it I want to get the Howell Automotive bottom end kit. Does any one on here have it? Anyway, I am planning to rebuild with high compression, and just have a few questions. I want to buld it with 12.5:1 pistons. First off, is there any problem with that? Has anyone done it? What kind of power gains can I expect from that? And when I order it says I can get the ppistons and rings in standard size or .020 over size, and can get the rod and main bearings om standard or .010 undersize. What do I do? Sorry for my ignorance. If anyone can give me any info on any of this I have listed or just some info on anything else, please help me! Also, how much will it be to get all of these parts installed (roughly)? I appreciate any help you guys can give! Thanx in advance.

well it will give you quite a gain over our stock 9.6:1 comp. not sure exactly in hp. the reason they have the standard or oversized .10 pistons is if you want to bore out your cylinders a little bit to make sure the cylinder walls are nice and smotth. also the rod bearings are the same i believe. the only disadvantage to 12.5:1 comp is that you must run high octane gas all the time. since you are comp more air your temp will go up and you have a much higher chance of detination. price wise it all depends on if you can pull the engine or not. if you can i think some here have been quoted 500-700 for engine reasemble? but im not completely sure . you should ask dave_fl he jes is still undergoing his rebuild. well thats my advise and good luck

He had some problems with the 12.5. Just wanted to make you aware. You might want to talk to James (or Gary at Howell) to make sure you can avoid these same problems.

If you've spun a bearing, the problem is with your crank and rod bearings, not your pistons and rods. (unless you sent a rod through your block, then you've got bigger problems)
Just buying the bottom end kit is not going to help - you've already buggered up your crank journals. if you're going to rebuild it, find a crank FIRST. If you build your motor off a screwed up crank, you're just going to spin another bearing.

Check the crank first, the damage may not be that bad... You might be able to have the crank mains and journals machined .010" off. and use undersized bearings. but if you really tore up the crank then you'll need a new one. Have a machine shop check it first.
