I believe that the 2.4L comes only in the Spyder Eclipse

it is the 2.4L that comes in the PT cruiser, the 2000+ dodge Stratus, and a couple of other cars. it's a 2.4L 420A (NOT the 2.4L 4g64 that comes in the Spyder!) and is a "fairly" simple swap, as motor swaps go. if you can find one at a good cost at a local junkyard, go for it.

i hear is only a gain of 10 hp. But, don't quote my on that.

24229, about the HP and TQ... Posted by Skrilla, Jun-02-02 06:47 PM
...an old saying goes "reliability ia built into the block and HP is built into the head". The 2.4L engine *only* creates 10 more HP because of the PCM, cams, and map/timing curves. That ALL changes when the block gets a "longer" breathing fuel system, cam setup and PCM. That and I know for a fact that the HP gain is more than a measly 10 with our cylinder head. TQ will only do you good so long, and that is until it runs out of steam. HP is a reflection of how well, and long, the TQ can perform. With a head designed to push more air (read:2gnt cylinder head) the HP will go up. Mostly due to the shorter duration cams, but if you want it to scream like it should other things should be done for highend HP, since the 2.4L block wasn't quite designed for it.

Like with built internals, balancing shaft removal and a balanced crank/rotating mass, I don't see a problem with a higher reving 2.4L block/2.0L head hybrid.

24231, RE: 2.4L??? Posted by Thunderous_Talon, Jun-01-02 02:23 AM
Dino, correct me if i am wrong(which i am almost positive i am not), but isnt it also the engine that came in the first gen Stratus's, Cirrus's...??

24232, RE: 2.4L??? Posted by alain95i4, Jun-01-02 06:55 AM
Yes it's also the engine from the first generation Stratus Breeze Sebring convertible and some minivan
yes the engine is rated at 150HP crank but like any other engine some bolt on could help Also this engine come with balancing shafts, removing them is a nice power gain and the engine will also rev quicker
basically you will need to put on the 2.4L the head of the 2.0L because this engine is reversed exhaust in the back intake in the front by keeping the 2.0L head you could also keep your wiring harness since most of the sensors are actually on the head, for the others you could need to splice in a few inches of wires to make them longer
Motor mount, only the one in the passenger side fender shouldneed to be redone

How is the header supposed to clear the block?
2.4L is a inch taller.
Don't rev too hard either-2.4L isn't designed to rev like our 2.0L (explains the balance shafts)
Plus I don't know of anyone who makes bottom end rebuild kits for 2.4L 420a's.
What went wrong with your motor? Why don't you rebuild with a stroker?

Go read that thread on a Neon board

The 2.4 is 3/4 inch taller on the bloc

Like Skrilla said "I needed to have the down pipe partially fabricated (not a problem - any muffler shop can fix this)."
As soon as mine goes out, 2.4L goes in. Also if I find a working one this summer for $750 or less, it is in. A friend bought one who might sell his car now so :)

I keep seeing this 2.4l everywhere on this board. I think i should be seeing 2.3l stroker all over this board. It revs better and no need to buy another block. And, it is also legal for certain racing because it is the original engine. Did howell ever get any numbers out for his kit? i still think that 1600 ain't bad.

24238, RE: 2.4L??? Posted by Skrilla, Jun-04-02 08:25 AM
the block and fabrication costs 800 bucks. 800$ for 2.5L of engine that CAN rev if it is built. That costs an additional 1000-1500 and what are you left with...well you know the saying: "no replacement..."
One more thing the block is EXACTLY 1.01" taller than the 2L. The extra ~1 is added directly on top of the block (which explains the longer stroke).
The ultimate would be a destroked 2.4L to 2.2L with overboring. The crank angle is much better and the engine would cause less vibration than the 2L or even theoretically be able to out rev the 2L - think about that one...

24239, 2.4 Write Up Posted by thedawg, Jun-06-02 10:29 AM
Ok, this subject has been beaten to death, but I found this link on the Neon board that afaik, hasn't been posted here yet.

Most things in there apply- just rememeber that you'll be reusing your own head, and the engine mounts match up easier on our cars.

Yes its do-able swap......firing order is the same motor mounts are in the same place EXCEPT one which is the one near the cam gears..... me and a buddy had to customize one so the motor would be level and sit snug in our engine bay......What you wanna do is get CAMS with a longer duration and also you wanna get them with a 20% more stroke bc it is longer......hood clears just ok...Also the oil filter tends to come loose due to alot ALOT of vibration....due to the balance shaft removal.....and if you have motor mount inserts like some of us........Also take the oil pan and get it cut to where its a little bit smaller in depth bc if your dropped your gonna bang the sumbitch and well you know what happens then........WOW ..uh..... its petty long thing i have going on here so if you have ?'s ask em then i can anwer them goes quiker i think .....and yes with this your talking low 14's with this swap a yes your all motor....Nice isntit....... 24242, Hybrid I find your story hard to swallow Posted by Skrilla, Jun-07-02 04:02 PM
I just thought it was kinda funny how you worded some of the things in your post like "What you wanna do is get CAMS with a longer duration and also you wanna get them with a 20% more stroke bc it is longer". Are you serious? 20% more stroke in your camshaft, I don't know dude, sounds fishy. Besides longer duration cam will lower your HP and bring up your TQ. That is pretty much up to the builder, but I have more than enough TQ as it is and could easily chirp 3rd without my turbo. Or "Also take the oil pan and get it cut to where its a little bit smaller in depth bc if your dropped your gonna bang the sumbitch". Then I thought maybe you're talking about the dipstick, but how many people say oil stick, or refer to it in depth instead of length, which brought me back to realize you were referring to your oil pan. This means that bumping or scraping it is pretty difficult considering your pan is above your "I" beam, which is what the front motor mount sits on. Now unless you aren't riding on your suspension you aren't going to bottom out. LMAO!! Wait one more thing - My balance shafts and shaft sprocket are all removed from my 2.5L block so I was wondering how your oil filter comes loose and what oil pan you use. I have a solid MM and 2 of the inserts (passenger and tranny) and my filter doesn't budge. Do you not tighten it or something, because with the mods I have I would get more vibration than just about anyone on the board. If I'm wrong and making an ass of myself I will apologize BUT you have to admit these claims are strange to say the least. That and I tend to see newbies claiming stuff that isn't new or impossible.
With all that miss wording I thought is was funny how you call yourself the "Master of the 420a", anyway if you please, clarify.
