Ok, so apparently that knocking noise I heard from my engine was a rod, and now I have to pay $3k for a new engine. If I had more money, I would have gotten a cyclone. I have a '96 Talon with 88k miles, and I'm getting a salvaged engine with 36k miles, so that's cool. Question is, my dad already knows the total price ($3202) and I have no extra money on me....is there anything my mechanic can do while the motor is out to tweak and get a few HP? I ask because it's probably the only time I could get any free labor since the engine's out of the car and all.

Good thing you didn't have enough to buy the cyclone engine because it's a 4G63 and wouldn't fit ;)

DONT BUY A NEW ENGINE! Rebuild yours. Its about $3000 for everything including head work and all the labor. You could get the high compression pistons if you plan on staying NA but if you ever plan on going turbo get low compression. Its a perfect time to do it!

They have a non turbo cyclone engine, but it's a 6 bolt I believe

How much are they charging you for JUST the new(used) motor? $3200 sounds like an ASS-RAPE job to me.

He said we needed $1600 for the motor. I asked about the rebuild, and it would be also about $3k, and I would have gotten performance parts, but if I did that he said there'd be no warranty. Plus, this guy builds hotrods and knows engines inside and out, and said rebuilds never match up perfectly like new. So, $3202 for motor, labor, new timing belt and tensionare, and 1 year warranty.

Fuck warranties. I bought the extended warranty when I got my car and it was like $1000+. I NEVER had to bring it in for service the whole time. If you want to have a fast car you are going to have to rebuild that thing.

Don't rebuild with low compression and no turbo. Doesn't make much sense. I would rebuild with at least 9.5 or 10.5 compression since it dosen't sound like you have the money for a turbo kit right now. Low compression and no turbo is not a good combination cause you car is gonna be slow as hell without the forced induction.
