24020, How To Gut A Cat? (and i dont mean kitty)
Posted by bebe1405, May-28-02 10:55 PM
I am very curious about this. I just bought the whole catback an Apex dunk brand new for 300 flat.Well i installed it the other day and i love it. My first question is my friend told me to gut the cat. Is it worth it? I dont want no cel or anything of that nature. So is it really worth it?

And my last question is the piping is 60mm. Now dont know if it is because my car is so low the the piping coneected to the muffler itself rests on my rear cross member and makes a pretty annoying rattling noise once in a while. DOes anybody else have that prob?If so or if not how can i correct it. I was gonna rap a rag round it but that probly would ignite. What can i do?

Chris i really think its time to get struts. your blown ones arent helping this situation rattling on the catback. also as far as gutting the cat. you will get a cel w/o a turbo. or atleast thats the way its been seen.

My CEL went away after a week. Just take a long hard stick and break the insides of the cat convertor and then start it up and all the shit will blow out.

That don't sound like a good idea. The stick thing. I took my cat off and used a steal pole to break up the honey comb inside the cat. If you get a CEL, and you will, you can use one of the following methods to get rid of it.

They sell he Mil Eliminators in pairs. So you could go in on them with someone else. We only need one.

I don't personally know how to do it, but have heard from many sources that it is bad. Something about changing pipe diameters and airflow pressure/velocity affecting backpressure. Most people have been advised to either get a high flow cat or a test pipe. I imagine if you were dead set on doing it you could simlpy take a high speed drill with a cylinder hone or some other similar device to basically beat the crap out of the catalyst material inside. I'm not an authority on the subject though. Hope this helps!

I figured people would understand stick as being a metal pole. Yes a wood stick wouldn't work very well. A drill isn't needed cause the Cat honeycomb is light and flimsy and easily broken.

No check engine light here after about 6 months of driving without a cat. You will not get a cel and if you did who cares?

mine was on for a while until I did the o2 sensor bypass trick, however after you take your cat out and decide to beat on it (preferrably with a big metal stick and a hammer) make sure NOT TO BREAK THE BOLTS at the top, you can bang the crap out of it but be careful when you turn it over, it's very easy to do and does ream a few horses, but a test pipe or high flow cat would look so much better eh? so go for it, either way unless you bypass the O2 sensor you're going to get a CEL while N/A, btw, where'd you get an APEX cat back for 300, I'd be interested in that

screw gutting the cat, buy a test pipe at testpipe.com, they're only $40 and better than having a crappy ass cat making werid noises and smelling like crap. you need smooth airflow going out the back of the exhaust not through there.
