24001, Cams not timed correctly Posted by Black97GS, May-28-02 06:30 AM
I am getting a CEL 11. My car is running a little rough and is a bit down on power. I just did a head change on it a few weeks ago, and apparently I didn't get the cams timed properly. I checked it, double-checked it, and triple checked it, and the marks were lined up perfectly. At this point, I am not sure what to do with it. The marks are not exactly precision. And dots are a lousy way to mark them anyway. I hate to tear all that shit apart again for nothing.
Also, anyone have a source for bolts to use on the crank pulley? The only one I was able to find at a local bolt shop finally gave out on me.

check the VFAQ for the specific procedure

that should help, trust me I know what you're going through (heh heh :) ) but I don't have a check engine light, I apear to be 1/2 a tooth off. Just check my other recent posts in the performance section and you'll see wha I mean.

That's the guide that I used to do the timing belt. I did everything just as it said, but I'm not sure what went wrong. I have to guess that one of the marks is inaccurate. I can change the timing, but I don't know which way to go! My marks are dead on! I guess the CEL tells me my exhaust cam is off, but what about my intake came?

When you put in the new timing belt and lined up the marks did you have to adjust the cams or crank posistion. If yes, you may be a 1/2 tooth off and having the problems. You will need to re-line up everything and keep the points straight. If no, you may have tightened the timing belt wrong. Their may have been some slack and it caused a tooth to be off. The best way to adjust or fix these problems is to reposistion all marks to their correct points. Place the belt tightly around the cams, crank and water pump. tighten up the belt adjustment pully so that you still maintain the marks but tighten up the belt. After this is all done release the spring belt adjustment. Eveything should be in perfect alignment.
