23489, Valve clatter after synthetic Posted by 1white98eclipsegs, May-20-02 02:46 PM
I bought my 98 eclipse with 50k miles on it. The previous owner used castrol 10w-30 non-synthetic. When i changed the oil, i began to use Mobil 1 synthetic and shortly after my valves began to clatter at high rpms. I thought that it might just be mobil1 so i changed it to castrol synthetic, but they kept clattering. I have changed it once again to castrol synthetic blend and the clattering is less but it is still doing it a little. Any advice would help. I do know for a fact that the valves didnot clatter before.

Switch back to conventional oil going from convential to synthetic with semi high miles is not a good thing to do, It can loosen things up.

Yeah the synthetic molecules are smaller than conventional oil, so they don't coat as thick, and the gasket and valve seals etc. Are used to conventional oil, switchign at this point, I wouldn't do.
Una salus victus.
