23477, Crackling From the Engine
Posted by calcio20, May-20-02 11:10 AM
Ok, today I filled the car up with gas and started it. All of a sudden I get the crackling noice near my starter. It's somewhat loud and has never happened prior to today. Also, looked under the car and the sound was loud there, too. There's even a small smell of something burning, but it's very faint. The car drives fine and the temp. is ok. Please help.

-Thanks 2gnt,

Chris

DOH, turns out my starter went bad. 300 to replace.... Also, he says I might have done damage to my flywheel. Could I have? I only drived the car like five miles after the crackling. Any help here would be great.

You can check the flywheel through the hole where the starter is mounted. Take the starter off and turn the engine from the crank pully bolt. This will probably be easier with 2 people, one person turning the crank and one looking in the starter hole.

get a push button switch, run 2 wires, one to a ground, and one to the starter. Tap the button from under the car when it is on stands if u have them. Tapping the button will bump the starter and turn the flywheel to check it. We did this at work for our tranny business.
