can i take off my accessory belts to free up some HP...I know they run the AC and power steering but does it run something special like the oil or water pump???????? I mean if i take it off and run the car will it screw up something in the engine???

It runs the water pump, ps pump, alternator, and the ac (we only have 1 belt, right?) You can disconnect the ac with no trouble, but the water pump and alternator must turn, and if you disconnect the ps pump, you need to drain out all the fluid so you aren't trying to move that around along with the steering linkage and wheels. Maybe a shorter belt eliminating some accessories would be ideal.

LAST EDITED ON 24-May-01 AT 01:39 PM (PST)The water pump is turned by the timing belt, the alternator is on another belt entirely. The oil pump may be turned by the timing belt as well, but i know for a fact that it isn't turned by an accessory belt. If you really must take off the belt, you aren't going to hurt anything other than your ability to turn sharply.
I know, i ran my car for two days once without that belt... because it snapped and flew off :-)

I ran my car without the power steering and ac belts in fall and winter for three years in row without any problem. just hard to turn.
