2319, Supercharger??? Posted by IowaRS_racer, May-24-01 06:17 AM
Okay Im fairly new to this group..so maybe Ive missed this post but is there a supercharger out there for us??? Im asking this because I was digging through all my old magazines when I came across one that boasted a Dodge Stratus with a supercharger... now 1. the stratus is fairly similar to our cars , correct??? 2. Our could this have been a custom type job..... for some reason I was missing the pages that the article was on so Im left wondering whats going on here... The magazine was like Max Power or Max Speed its like 3 or 4 years old....

Nope no supercharger. I don't know what the stratus has in it but I think our closest cousins are the neons and avengers so I don't think the engine in that is the 420A.
The might make super chargers for the Stratus so I don't know if it's custom or not.
Don't get a supercharger ... go turbo. Many good turbo kits out there for our cars and are ready to go. HRC, Star, NER (hopefully soon). Not all that expensive either which is great.

Well I can see geting a turbo on a 420a they pump big power, Yeah most kits are about 2,000-4,000 right? But what about install?

If you got time, and can afford to have the car down for a few days, the do it yourself. Of course though you will need some tools, and if you are *completely* new to this, you will need some help. A friend is a cool person to have around, even if he does nothing (hint hint Nick, if you're reading this).

whats the difference between a supercharger and a turbo?

2324, RE: Supercharger??? Posted by Skrilla, May-25-01 07:07 PM
The literal term of the turbo is simply an exhaust gas driven supercharger. It is a supercharger than spins off the E.G. instead of draining power off your crankshaft

Superchargers are more reliable and safer though arent they??

2326, I think turbos are... Posted by Skrilla, May-28-01 05:40 PM
...but turbos are also easier to screw with which is why they ususaly have failure BUT that is STRICTLY driver error. The only real benefit TO ME is that altitude does not affect superchargers because they dont rely on atmosphereic air but rather "crank spun air". Certain superchargers create their own affect on engine power whereas turbos purely fatten the stock powerband, which also means atmosphere has a direct affect on it's power. At 5000 ft. above sea level a cars engine loses 16% power. At 10,000 ft. above sea level a cars engine loses 30%. Oxygen becomes ~1/2 as thin per atmosphere. A supercharger that makes 50HP will continue to no matter what but a turbo will make 42HP at 5000'. I don't No Lag is a benefit to a supercharger as it becomes offset by parasitic drag its volumetric efficiency. This is also why most pressurized sportscars are turbos (and superchargers cost more)

2327, Difference Between a TurboCharger and a Supercharger Posted by RS_Guy, May-26-01 04:53 PM
Converting what Skrilla Said into plain english ;-):
A Supercharger and a Turbocharger both compress CLEAN air and then send in into the engine.
A supercharger is belt-driven. i.e. a belt attachecd to the motor (at the crankshaft usually) turns the supercharger's internal stuff in order for it to such air in and compress it.
A turbocharger (turbo for short) has two *seperate* turbine blades that are only connected by a shaft. The turbo uses exhaust gases to spin up the exhaust turbine. Now on the other end of the shaft, the intake turbine is spinning too (becuase they are connected, remember) and that sucks clean air in and compresses it before sending it to the engine.

And to add one last point to the whole matter, superchargers give ALOT more bottom end than a turbo does, that is the only reason ppl with big blocks and cars that can run them go for them, more jump from the line....not to mention the simple facts that yes, we can get alot of power from a turbo, you can get more from a superchrager. The biggest thing that pains me is what Vortech has done...:((( They took a damn bone stock Honduh SI and damn near doubled the power with only the blower and fuel mods, nothing to the internals(think the outcome was 142 @ wheels before and 278 @ wheels after) To that I say DAMN MAKE US ONE!!!!! I know we can get even more out of one if they would just try the bastards...

I dunno about Vortech's Supercharger, but the Jackson Racing Supercharger for the SI is a joke! The SI ran a 15.0 WITH the supercharger installed properly!!!!!

I saw an integra with jackson racing supercharger (pretty sure it was jackson racing, if i remember correct) run 13.2 about a month and a half ago.

...and that was the DRAG GENERATION III TURBO KIT with an intercooler. The system could handle up to 400HP

That's not true about Superchargers being able to make more power than a Turbo. Superchargers are good because they give off lots of power off the bat, but you can't upgrade them as easily. Turbos all you have to do is upgrade the turbo or up the boost. So turbos have potential to give more horsepower also. But yeah it would be nice to have a supercharged 2GNT.

Superchargers do NOT make more power. Why I prefer turbo over supercharger - Less parasitic drag Controllable boost from cockpit The lag is not that much worse, regardless of what people think All the supposed advantage of all that low end supercharger power is WORTHLESS - you would only spin your tires more anyway. Our cars need the power up top not down low. Not all superchargers provide a lot of low end, only the roots style, as they spin at a fixed rpm vs a vortech that makes boost according to the cars rpm
