Has anyone else taken out there cams to do a head gasket or am I the only stupied one? Is it possible to do a headgasket on our cars WITH OUT removing the cams?

Bullshit. it is very much possible and even easy. All you need is a ratchet with an extension, and posibly a swivel head attachment for it. if you don't take the cams out, you can't get the head bolts out, but the head will come off just fine. Our stock headbolts are fairly stout, and i've never felt uncomfortable reusing them.

So yes, it's possible. it's a waste of time to take the cams out, IMO.

And I also wouldn't reuse the headbolts either but again, that's my opinion.

It's also my opinion that you should have the engine balanced when rebuilding, Dino feels otherwise. Everyone has their opinion.

My engine is getting balanced. And I am using the stock bolts.

Hey Dave, since you are looking to daily drive close to 15 psi, you should look in to getting the ARP studs.

how long of a process is to to change the head gasket? cause on my dads beemer it wasnt really too bad...

Yeah for $35 I see no reason not to buy new head bolts. But to change head bolts there is no way to remove them without removing the cams. I'm with Kyle, it's apart... balance it.

So to answer your question, can it be done? Yes, I loosened them hoping to snake the bolts around the cams. But couldn't. Would I do it that way? No, because I will rpelace the bolts.

Wheres a good place to get the arp head bolts? I need them fast since my head and block go into the machine shop tomorrow.
